My second factory key finally broke and since 2007 the tag with the key code has disappeared. Does anyone now of a free way to get the key code to make new ones? I have a 2007 STX special edition.

You lost any chance of getting it for free by waiting until the code disappeared.
They gave me a key ring with the code on a piece of metal attached to it if I remember correctly. I did discover you can put one of the broken ones behind the dirt sleeve to the ignition and shifter with double sided tape and just use a valet key. Cuts out one of the anti theft features but it works.
YEs, you need the CHIP that is inside the black handle on the key.. You are correct, if the broken key is placed close enough to the PICKUP COIL around the key cylinder, then an UNCHIPPED key will turn the ignition and the broken key will supply the code to start the truck.... You can also do this if you get a NEW KEY AND LOCK and install......... just keep the ORIGINAL key with CHIP and tape very close to the pickup coil.
I assumed he lost both electronic key parts , I know dealer can do it from vin and pcm . I have had locksmith with the right machine make a copy but I would always have two, just in case one came up missing .
No I didnt lose either one of the original keys. When I bought my truck along with the 2 keys and 2 Fobs the key ring and a small piece of metal with the keycode on it incase you did lose them. Truth be told I didnt lose it personally but I did lose it in a divorce because if I ask her to look then it wont be in the file where i put it and i cant get access to the file either. I wasnt sure if there was a program or APP for a smart phone that would tell me with just the VIN #.
If you have the two keys most locksmiths can make it , I have a good guy who does them he just bought the expensive machine to make all the new ones . I just had him make another one for wifes 2015 and we hid it in car so she could get to it with the door entry key pad, its not easy to find but if someone steals her purse out of town she will be able to cope with it .I used to tape one in the wiring harness of my company car for emerg ,you really had to need it to get to it . I would never use those magnetic things as thieves know all about them .
I do understand the divorce thing ,life is tough ,been there done that .I will check with my key guy to see what he says .
If there was an app thieves would use it for the vehicle they had an order for to steal it . So your truck might show up in mexico . Try to get that back .
You can have two new CHIPPED keys cut by using the valet key blank... You can NOT program the new keys without having TWO CHIPPED KEYS in your possession now, or broken key with the CHIP in it............... The dealer ( or other) can program two new keys without the original chipped key... I believe you might be able to do this yourself if you have a specific app on your laptop.
I ordered 2 chip keys from Ebay for 9.00 bucks and had them cut at Ace for free. Since I had both original keys I was able to program the 2 new keys myself. You take an old key turn to ACC for a couple seconds and then it off then put in the 2nd original key to the ACC for 2 seconds but now within 10 seconds put in the first new key and turn to ACC for 8 seconds and turn it off. Now put that same new key in again and turn it to ACC for 2 seconds and turn off. Now put in one of the original keys back in and turn to ACC for 2 seconds and turn off, now take the 2nd new key to ACC for 8 seconds then turn off. Now both new keys should be programmed.
