Dealer will either give you a key or will give you the code for the key (sequence of numbers representing the depth of each cut)
If theres a local locksmith, ask if he/she can make a key from a dealer obtained code, if they can get the code from dealer, thats the cheaper way out.
If not just have ford make u a new key.
This ONLY works provided it is the original ignition
I drilled out the ignition and had a new door key cut. Then my wife found the keys in her purse.
What do you mean by this? You cant have a key cut from the door that also fits the ignition. Theres 6 tumblers in the ignition and 6 in the door and the key has 10 cuts. Both the ignition and door lock share to common tumblers. Picture it like this
[Tip of the Key] -- I I I I C C D D D D - - [Head of the key]
Each Letter represents a tumbler. I's are ignition tumblers C's are shared betweem the two (Common) and D's are door tumblers.
Good info to know incase the dealer or a locksmith try to cheat you
I lost my key in my 1991 F250... and the ignition lock and i think entire steering column was replaced on this truck at one point. Therefore i cant go to the dealer with the tumbler.
currently i've removed everything except the steering wheel. I took the big steering wheel retaining nut off and tried to pull the steering wheel off with human force, but it's not coming... should i just pull harder or am i missing something else to get this thing off?
essentially i found a locksmith that told me that if i can get the lock cylinder out and bring it to him, he'd make me a new key for it for 50 bucks. Just gotta get it out without the key... hmmmm
can anyone shed some light on this situation for me?
Here are some pictures to show you what my situation looks like
Dont pay a lock smith 50 bucks to make you a new key for a old worn out tumbler! Just go buy a new tumbler from Napa! Its 14 bucks and comes with 2 new keys!
wow.. seriously? that's awesome. I"ll call napa tomorrow and see if they have one or can order me one. So i guess the question now is how to get this lock cylinder out and put the new one in without the key for it.
I've read some postings on here saying that I need to drill the center of the keyhole with progressively larger drill bits and eventually the cylinder will break free. That seems kind of tricky to me, but sounds like my only option. Question is though, after I do that, how do i install the new one ?
My honey has one and I keep a spare in the truck just in case......yes, I also have spare windows...lol
Ditto...I have three spare keys for my F350, although I had to get a complete lock set from a junkyard because the originals were copies of copies and not all of the keys worked on all locks.
Little thing that ought to be common sense but isn't; get spares made when you buy a vehicle!!! Also, spares should be made by a real locksmith who will read the depth of the key and cut a new one! Not copying off by the worn-down original key.
