found this comment on a Ford forum, has anyone looked into the oil filter cooler?

Mine has a slight tick as well and I'm at 40k miles. My previous truck was a GMC with the 6.0 and it also had a cold start knock/tick. I went through BBB arbitration against GM and they ended up putting a brand new 6.0 engine in it. I was allowed to see the engine upon tear down and the local dealer's mechanic showed me virtually no wear or damage to the pistons and no wear on the cylinders. Based on what my ears heard, I would have thought the motor would appear destroyed. But I was wrong.

I will just live with the noise and stay diligent on my frequent oil changes with full synthetics. It's no fun though when your gas engine sounds like a diesel.

So pardon my ignorance, but how does one tighten up the oil cooler, exactly?

I'm thinking it's the housing the oil filter screws on to. It might have the send and return line for the oil cooler. I had this happen on an old suburban. All I got out of it though was an oil leak.

Hope this helps...

I did this on My gas 2019 F 250.. and Believe it has been very worthwhile in keeping my engine quiet..

And I understand "oil "recommendation 's create a firestorm..

So Little background..

I tested oil for the USAF on all Military Aircraft while stationed overseas..and could bore one to tears on oil history..

But like many here I like a smooth quiet engine.. so these are suggestions based on my experience..only..And Im not affiliated with any of the material vendors.

Foremost.. I do not run cheap gas. Also I purchase gasoline from a high turnover station..I always attempt to find a newer built station if possible

When I have run non premium gas ( out of town..etc) ..The 6.2 struggled and made horrific sounds.. dull sounding.. I never run BP period..
________________________________

I had the slight tick at first and questioned the flow rate/oil flow restrictions./.viscosity ..

I decided to get away from Ford Lubricants of all kinds...and determined that the oils were not flowing smoothly..

I looked into the filter mediums and some oil filters manufacturers run very high compressed filter mediums and knew from past experiences that on cold days the mediums would not let the oil flow in a "balanced" range and once the engine warmed up the noise subsided.

In addition ..once an oil gets dirty it does not flow well on these high compressed ..high density mediums.. Also a number of "synthetics" may not hold up well.. and ..there are a number of blends as well

Once The engine broke in @ 1500 miles I installed these two products

What I immediately noticed was the engine /transmission became very smooth and the noise became no more..The transmission shifted cleanly and the engine did not labor ..

In the end I will not run out the engine oil/filter to the extent the manufacturers state but the testings on the oils and filter flow rates are worthwhile to consider..

The cost differences are minor ..

If you get board and want to see some general information..this information may be of value.. again hope it helps

It’s unfortunate that this modern engine is so sensitive to fuel and oil brands/types , I’ve never had engine tick/knock (heard within the cab ) on any other vehicle I’ve own ,(mostly GM) it may be a Ford characteristic ... I did once have a 2000 ranger that ran quieter with premium octane. Just would like to know the exact source of the noise .

Many folks here don’t seem to be aware of the Hemi tick, an affliction that can strike any 5.7 or 6.4 Hemi at any time. Look it up...it’s a thing and one reason why I didn’t get a Ram HD.

Based on what I’ve read, I don’t need to worry about my 6.2 like I did the motor in my ‘16 Rebel.

I have an appointment (again ) with my dealership on Monday ... they want to open the valve covers to check rockers and cut open oil filter to look for metal shavings (not the microscopic ones)... but after he told me this he stated it’s a normal engine noise characteristic.... so why open up the valve covers ?

It has a cold start knock, does not seem to get louder or faster when the engine speeds up. Actually seems like it goes away when I rev it up a little. Goes away all together after I drive it and the engine warms up. Could this hopefully be anything other than a rod starving for oil? I have not brought it back to the dealer yet because it seems to only happen when it is first started up and not driven yet.
Mine did it once maybe twice......replaced OEM oil with Penzoil Platinum and no more ticks.....er ah ticking....
Could something to do with the ability of the oil to keep all components covered with a film of lubricant.....but in all things made by man YMMV as well.

Just went to dealer and used the Rotella 5w-30 truck/suv for gassers. Start ups during the day was normal, 12k on the odometer.
Keep an eye on it as well and consider temps as well. See if it clears up after the OEM is drained out.
Good luck....

Thank you , I just wonder has anyone with a 17-19 6.2 has had catastrophic engine failure due to this engine tick .

Yep, if it really annoys, then do what previous posters suggested and go full synthetic. The Ram crowd found Redline in 5W-30 was Hemi honey...there’s plenty of research and discussion over on ramforums.com under the 4G Engine & Performance section (see the “synthetic oil” thread.

I'm using QSUD 5W-30 in my 6.2 and it sounds fine...I got great results from this stuff in my Ram and Blackstone Labs even said I could go to a 11.5K OIC. I imagine my first UOA from the Ford will be similar; I’ll know for sure in about 7K miles.
