Trying to find info on front drivesahft

I have been searching and after a few days of checking the stickies and searching here I'm breaking down to ask for help. I have a 1974 f250 4x4 with, according to the guy i bought it from, a dana 60 front axle. I have been trying to find a front driveshaft for it and can not for the life of me. As the truck sits the face to face distance is 54 inches. Is there a part number floating around that would make searching ebay or something easier?

everyone says their high boy has a Dana 60 in the front but very few did. only the heaviest GVW's came with the 60. most are 44's.

finding a good used one by part numbers might be tough. you're probably going to have to find someone who knows what they have and what you need. if you can't check out Denny's Driveline. not cheap but he can make anything .

Yeah I'll have to look into that to verify it further. I do know a coworker was going to buy it just for the axle to throw on his demo derby truck but let me have first offer since the body was in really good shape for our region. I did check the door plate and the gvwr was 7100. I have stumbled across denny's in my searches so I'll have to give them a better look.

You would probably be best off sourcing the parts and getting someone local to put it together. Tom Woods, Denny's, has good deals on parts. They will even balance and assemble it for you.

First and foremost id make sure you have a dana60.

I've got a pile of driveshafts from dentsides. Can't promise you what any of them came out if but I can see if I have one that's about that length, if you'd be interested. Won't be offended if you say no.

If you have a 7100 GVW that's the lowest and most certainly is not a DANA 60. unless, someone changed it . does it have the large hubs or the smaller 1/2 ton looking ones the light GVW's come with ?

I have a '74 and a '76 high boy . if pictures would help identify what you're looking for I can get some.

@440 sixpack pictures would certainly help. I'm new to these old trucks and am used to working on 1990-2000 german cars. Ill try and get some also to see in anyone can identify what I have.

@fordguy2100 once we figure out what I actually have I'd entertain that idea.

Members, the person you bought your truck from either didn't know or he lied to you.
the front axle assembly pictured is a closed knuckle D44 with drum brakes & is correct for a '74 F250 4x4.

He didn't know, He just thought that's what it had based on what someone else told him. But knowing this helps a lot for the future for buying gaskets. If i choose to go the route of having a shaft built are would this be the 1310 or 1330 u-joints? or would simply measuring across the yoke give me my answer as i see there is about a 1/4" difference in the two. I've continued searching and still not turning much up, so its looking more like I'll have one built, but that's pretty low on my priority list with the truck right now.

They should be 1310's. which are 3.219" .

Just get one and try it on both yokes, you need U joints anyway.

73-77 F250 highboys use 2 different U-joints in the 3 drive shafts. The intermediate shaft between the transmission & transfer case uses a standard 1310 series joint. Both the front & rear D-shafts use a combo U-joint...one section of the cross specs out as a 1310 & the other as a 1330. If I remember correctly the driveshaft side is 1310 & the axle yokes are 1330.

memberz, if your rear D-shaft is intact & original it should confirm this & you can use it for reference when you have the front shaft made...your only guess work would then be getting the correct length.
good luck to ya!

@fordrealdrive it is intact thanks for the info. I think the guess work using the measuring instructions from the few sites that make shafts will get me close enough. I don’t have any huge plans other than cosmetics and an efi for the truck. It’s stock form is perfect for my wants. Hopefully in a few weeks I’ll have some updates on its progress.
