Wastegate question- do they go bad?

Before I install the turbo, any reason to replace the wastegate? It looks good but does not appear easy to get to once installed. I already deleted the ebpv.

Depends on your goals, boost monitoring methods.

A once popular mod was the "7 turn mod", remove that wastegate actuator, turn the threaded end 7 times to shorten the rod's stroke and keep the wastegate closed longer. Some replace it with a fancy ( $$$ ) adjustable actuator to dial in their wastegate operation. Others replace it with a new stock style when the internal spring gets weak.

Wouldn't disconnecting the boost hose from a factory controller basically do the same thing that the TurboMaster is doing?

There is a spring inside that I suppose could get tired. If it does it allows the little trap door on the turbine housing to leak open too soon and cause the turbo to build boost slower than it should. The Banks actuator works on the same principle as the stock one, it is just a stronger version. The "7-turn" mod on the original one might be worth a try first. Same idea, just adding a little extra spring tension to keep the wastegate door shut tighter.

I would try that adjustable one if he'll give you a good price on it. Looks like all you do it tighten or loosen the nut on the end to adjust the set point.

Nope. The Turbomaster is fully adjustable when it's installed. Loved mine but the smog shop didn't.

Not quite as nice but I am happy with the Banks Big Head. Plus with a CARB OE number it passes smog.

I guess my question was a little short of complete; if you disconnect the hose and adjust the stock one won't it achieve the same thing?

I've played with mine and no matter what I do my boost maxes out at 15.5-16 according to TorquePro. But yesterday I discovered something very odd. I forgot to re-connect the electrical plug on the MAP sensor and took a spin and saw 9.9 lbs. of boost...WTF? I would expect it to stay at 0, or maybe some other number, but the reading came up under load which is very suspicious.

I would compare that with the Exhaust Back Pressure, to see if you have an exhaust leak.

It would, but the stock one is not easily adjustable. Not while it is installed anyway.

Not sure about the unplugged MAP. Maybe the EBP reading had something to do with it.
