Good morning! I love my 2015 F-550 box truck. We use it for recreational hauling of our toys and pull a small travel trailer. It is more truck than we need so it is never loaded heavy. At most the payload might approach 3,500 lbs and the 20 foot camper weighs less than 4,500 loaded. We bought it last summer and have made several long trips putting about 12,000 miles on it. It just turned 50k miles. Two days ago within 75 miles of our destination the engine, V-10 gas, all at once began ticking while driving our usual 60-65 mph. After stopping, checking the oil, looking it over best we could, and no indicator lights on, and all gauges good, we continued on to the campsite. It made it just fine with the ticking staying the same, no worse, no better. Yesterday after unloading we dropped it off at the local Ford dealer. Within a couple of hours they called and told us it needs a new camshaft and rollers and everything is covered under warranty......great news of course...very thankful for that. The concern is what's next? What about the other side of the top end? Is this a common problem? Any and all advice and guidance would be appreciated.
I look at your problem like a broke bone....some people break a bone.....many people don't....it just so happened some part in yours gave up and caused this issue...I would not worry about anything else becoming an issue....If you search the forums, not many complaints about the V10/6.8...nor other issues with the 550's.
If mine, the only concern might be some metal particles not being totally removed during rebuild. The filter should catch most if not all. I would drive it some and then do another oil and filter change after say 500 to 1500 miles..
Just be thankful it is covered and repair cost will be minimal and/or only time lost from not having the truck at your disposal.
Thanks for the good replies. Removing the metal shavings was also a concern for me. Yesterday I called the service advisor with a few more questions and she right away connected me straight to the technician. He's been Ford certified for 27 years and the dealership is second generation family owned and has been in business since 1964. So I'm feeling good about the shop. The technician said that when this happens it is rare but is usually on the right side. There is a "factory update" for this...….whatever that means.....I should have asked. He invited me to come in and look at the job when the parts arrive and they start the repair. Regarding the metal shavings he said they will stay on the top end but of course the filter and oil will be changed and inspected. That's good advice to change the oil again just in case, which I definitely will do.
Not sure exactly when, but they redesigned the roller rocker arms to allow better oil flow, so at least you'll be getting those.
I just did this job on my 08 a few months back. Some fleet vehicles (2013s I think?) had oil starvation issues, not sure if that carried on. Unusual that you wouldn't have gotten a misfire CEL for a chewed up cam. My first guess would have been exhaust leak.
Thanks again for the help. The link to the Ford repair notice is particularly helpful. Will definitely follow up first thing Monday and make sure they are aware and do the upgrade on both sides.
Yep. I found out that my VIN is not included. But my truck appears to fit all the criteria, year, model, engine size, plant where it was built, stripped chassis. Yes the bad side (right) is covered under warranty but the left is not. I emailed the dealer asking them to look into it further. Going to be an interesting week.
