My 6.0L seems to run and idle fine other than this weird squeak towards the front of the engine. (see video).
Recently replaced the alt but the noise was there before I did this - just starting to bug me now.
Does this seem like belt/ tensioner noise or worse yet a water pump? I searched the forum and found a long thread on 6.0l squeaks that had one owner at the dealership for what seems like HPOP faults? That thread died with no clear resolution and most of that conversation was before my truck was manufactured (10/06). That said, it seems like the noise they were complaining about was in the rear of the engine.
It sounds around belt speed, what's the belt condition like, and has it been replaced recently? If not, replacing it would be a bit of easy maintenance and might even cure it
Sounds like a beefed up version of my noise. New belt fixed it, but the old belt was only 2 years old with 10K miles on it, so I suspect it’ll come back. Will do a better pulley inspection next time.
if you spray water on the belt and it goes away, you can confirm it’s the belt.
Not so sure on squeaks, but a lot of noise can be identified by using a long wood dowel.
Place one end firmly near a rotating part and put your ear to the opposite end. Lots of bearing hum and knocks can be picked up. Be real careful not to get caught in belts, fans etc.
Sprayed the back of the tensioner pulley and it quieted down for a few miles. Not sure if some of that noise reduction is result of over-spray on belt or not. It's pouring rain here for the last two days it maybe be a few before I can get back to clearly identify.
Ok; I think we're onto something as the tone of the squeak has completely changed after spraying it. I guess I'm in the market for a new tensioner and belt.
