I think I have finally isolated my limp mode issue to a bad PSOM. I have a replacement cluster on the way. The truck only has 100K original miles. I definitely want to salvage that reading if possible. Does anyone know of any shops that can reprogram my original mileage into the replacement cluster?
USMCwindsor,
It's been ~ nearly ten years, but if my memory serves me correctly, you can swap out your original odometer into your new cluster. I had to change mine in my 1995 F-150 Eddie Bauer back in 2009. My original odometer needle bounced and it had 156K miles on it. I got an odometer off eBay with a reading of 131K (close to my original accumulated mileage) and I just changed them and the replacement works perfectly tot his day, nearly ten years and 17K miles later. Hope this help and presumable Devil Dawg. Thank you for your service

If the PSOM is bad, then swapping it into another cluster will not work.
One way is to unsolder the EEPROM from the old PSOM and install it in another one(hopefully is good). I have done that on my 95 E350 PSOM, but its not easy to do without damaging the PCB or the EEPROM. Others have read the data off the old one and reprogrammed another PSOM. I have not done that myself ....
It can be done by a good ic shop. Some won’t for fear of violating mileage tampering rules. Just talk to a good shop and explain your situation. That’s what I did.
No I do not know of a shop that can do it.
When my PSOM went out I had to do the copying myself to put my original miles in a PSOM from a salvage yard.
So I had to buy the required EEPROM programmer and dip clips off ebay.
Then use my Windows 7 disk top computer to do the coping.
But it has been a few years since I have done the copying.
No I do not do it for others as if they need one done they can very easy do it themselves as I did and it does not cost that much at all.
The information on how to do the copying will come with the EEPROM programmer.
No soldering involved and no electronic skill needed.
You do the copying with no power applied to eather PSOM.

Good to know this is semi-easy and doable for a DIY-er. Need to find time to go junkyarding and pull a few clusters.
UPDATE: Installed the cluster I got off EBAY over the weekend and the truck drives like a dream and shifts like a hot knife through butter. Drove it for two days with absolutely no limp mode or hard shift whatsoever. Southern Electronics www.instrumentclusters.com in Richmond Virginia claims to be able to restore the original PSOM which means no need to reprogram another one. Cost is $250 and you send them the entire cluster. They rebuild it, fix the worn out boards and return cleaned with a fresh set of bulbs with 2 business day turnaround. This is what they claimed over the phone anyway. We shall see if that holds true. Worst case scenario, I send them the EBAY PSOM and they can reprogram it to my true mileage (100,700). You have to submit an sworn affidavit regarding the mileage with the order. I will update once that process is complete
