Just purchase a 2017 XL with 5.0. It came with the trailer tow package and Pro trailer assist, but not the integrated brake controller. I put the integrated brake controller on my 2014 and was really impressed with it so I definitely wanted to go back with the OEM unit.. When I installed it in my 2014 I vaguely remember having to install a relay and I think fuse as well. Of course I had to have the Ford dealer activate the system afterwards. I just installed the IBC on my 2017, but I've found nothing that tells me I need to install a relay. I checked for the 30A brake controller fuse and it is there as well as the 5A in the passenger compartment. I can't really test it till the system is unlocked and I can't do that till middle of next week. I just want to make sure I have everything right before that. I watched a couple YouTube videos about the install but none mention fuses or relays. So did I miss anything?
Also, there is a brand new, in the package, connector pigtail in glove box...says it's something for the trailer system. Do I need to put that in or is it already there, they just put that pigtail in all of them. Thanks in advance.
I believe since your truck came equipped with the Trailer Tow package, everything is there except for the IBC unit. The pigtail in the glove box is since your truck didn't have the ford IBC, its to be used with any of the many after market brake controllers. My truck was ordered with the IBC and I didnot receive a Pigtail.
Thank you for the quick reply. A little more research on the web and evidently my truck doesn't come with a trailer battery charging circuit? Not particularly important in my case I just want to be sure what I have. All I really need at the moment is the electric brake setup. But if I did want trailer battery charging, it looks like that's a pretty serious install. Really? Ford couldn't do better than that or once again am I missing something?
IDK if the charging circuit issue is particular to your year of F-150. Ours came with the trailer tow package, but not the IBC (like yours). I added the IBC myself & the dealer activated it for us. The charging circuit is active on ours without any additional hand waving or circuit switching.
Thanks Glueguy. Hopefully that's the case with mine. Like I said I don't "need" trailer battery charging, just if I'm in the trailer wiring business might as well do everything at one shot so I'm always ready for anything. Thanks again guys.
One more thing. The battery charge circuit is not activated by default. It comes on when the engine is running, and shuts off when the engine is off. I think there is a delay after engine shut off, but I've never checked it.
I want to tag on to this thread. I have a 2016 Ford F-150. It has the tow package, with back up assist, etc. It didn't come with the IBC, so I ordered it online and received it today. I took the dash apart, per instructions that came with the unit. My issue is that I cannot find a plug. It says it should be "stored" on the back of the little storage cubby, but there's nothing. What do I do?
EDIT. as it was preowned, looks like someone had planned to do it before and had tucked the connector behind the dash over to the side.... crisis averted!
Hi,Just purchase the ITBC from the Dealer Parts Dept. Part# JLCZ-2C006-AA 1X and your dealer will have to Enable it in Forscan, Its easy to install just remove
the Filler plate below the 4X4 Selector and the Pigtail is right there it may have a cap over it,that should do it.
2015-2017 trucks that came with a hitch from the factory have no issue adding the trailer brake controller. It's literally a plug-and-play setup (with IDS programming).

Hi everyone
I have a 2018 F150 that I installed a Trailer Brake switch. All went well, I manually slide sw and you see the green bar light up on dash and it worked the trailer brakes ( stops the truck and trailer on level ground). My concern is that when driving doesn't feel like brake is working and don't see the bar go Green when applying brake, should I see this?
Thanks
