Hi All, I bought a 16' H&H trailer this morning that comes with electric brakes, but don't have a brake controller. Any such thing as good or bad with these? How about one being easier to install than another? Cost?
The Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller seems to be best controller on the market... I'm just basing this on reviews on this board, and people I know that have tried different controllers on the market.
I have the Teshonka Voyager. I tow a double Axle Fifth wheel trailer and I like this one better than the Piece of garbage one The RV dealer wanted to install (Husky). When you mount it make sure you read the installation notes about the angle of installation to make sure it reacts correctly to your braking.
I have a Tekonsha Prodigy and I like it very much. The installation was a breeze. I mounted the unit, plugged the pigtail in the recepticle on the truck and viloa! You're good to go. (Just follow the instructions for setting the braking)
I tow a 21 foot Tahoe toybox with my truck and it weighs about 8,200 lbs when loaded.
My grandfather, dad, and myself have the voyager. I looked at the prodigy but it was twice the price. The voyager works good enough for us. How much are you going to be towing? If quite often you may be better off spending the extra money. If your only going to be using it once and awhile the voyager could be good enough.
Thanks for all the info. It's refreshing to find a bunch of know-it-alls who really do know it all! Although I won't be towing that often for now, you never know what the future will bring (could be a fifth-wheel in my future ). I'm not one who likes to replace equipment if it can be helped -- thus the jump from a 2WD F150 to an F350 FX4, so I'm going to go with the Prodigy.
Thanx again!
BTW, thanks to Matt for the pic. Not a lot of level mounting spots to choose from. It'd be nice if they could have a mount that replaced the cubby hole above where yours is mounted, but that will work.
You can mount the prodigy anywhere from 0 to 70 degrees. It levels itself internally... no little lever to line up! I mounted mine with 3M double sided automotive tape and it has held fine. At first I tried velcro but it fell off on the first hot day.
All you need to do to hook it up is grab the "pig tail" harness out of the glove box, splice the 4 wires together according to the instructions and plug it into the plug under and to the right of the steering column. Done!
Oh yea, they sell on evilBay for $100 all the time or you can do what I did and order one for $125 from http://www.brakecontroller.com/ . They have free overnight shipping.
I have the Voyager controller on my truck. After replacing 2 sets of warped rotors, finally got smart and started using the trailer's brakes to help slow down the load. Haven't had any problems since the unit was installed. Mounted the unit in the small pocket to the right of the steering wheel. Drilled a small hole in the back, which is not visible outside the pocket, to run the wires. Unit is held in place by double stick tape since there is no weight to support.
