trivia ?

I found a term in the shop manual that I've never heard before. I think I know what it refers to, but thought I'd ask this all-knowing group.

Who knows what "Tinnerman nuts" are?

Aaron's got nuts. This site has pictures of them. www.aaronsmachinescrews.com/MachineScrewNuts.htm

Tinnerman is actually a manufacturer, according to one site I looked at. You learn something every day.

I'll buy that Johann, but in the shop manual it describes a common fastener used in a such a location that the clip on Aaron's page wouldn't work.

Any other takers?

OK Tim, I'll take a shot at it.

Johann has it right - Tinnerman is a manufacturer of many types of nuts and clips. Actually, it's Tinnerman Palnut at www.tinnerman.com.

As for where to buy them, my stock answer (that you are sick of hearing) is McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com). Type "Tinnerman" in McMaster's search box, and you'll find links to Tinnerman nuts and Tinnerman clips. There are even pictures to guide you to exactly what you need. McMaster doesn't identify which of the myriad nuts and other hardware in their catalog are actually Tinnerman brand, but you can pick from a whole slew of different types to meet your needs. If you can't find what you need at McMaster-Carr (you're too picky), you can probably browse Tinnerman's web site (above) for what you want. Tinnerman also has a distributor list on their web site.

If you still can't find what you want, I guess you're SOL and will have to make your own!

OK, times up! On page 163 of the shop manual the description of removing the axle begins with the instructions to "remove the Tinnerman nuts that secure the brake drum to the axle flange, and remove the brake drum."

Thanks for the info boys - I didn't realize Tinnerman was the inventor of cheap speed nuts, and I never heard the term used in conjunction with those flimsy spring steel 'keepers' that I always just twist off when removing a brake drum.

School's out!
