Hey Captjohn,
thanks for the info
How and where do I look for the info on the motor.... or is it some where I could look on the truck? or is it by year only pre 1994
if itsd an idi it will have steel valve coversand a fuel filter rite behind the altenator if it is a di or direct injection it will have plastic valve covers it will also have the fuel filter hidden. the di's were also refred to as powerstroke engines. wich means nothen its just a name.
There should be a sticker on the driver side valve cover that will tell you what motor and if the sticker is gone then you can look at the seriel number on the block which is on the driver side by the injector pump housing. You can call the dealer with that num. and they can tell you what you have.
A few more stupid questions, which by your opinions is a better unit idi or pwrstrk??
and which is more to fix or replace.. injection pumps or unit injectors?
I dont have the truck but i will be looking at it soon its a 93 by the way
If its a 93 it should have the 7.3L The IDI's are cheaper to fix than the DI and there is no computer for the motor on the IDI's When you look at the truck ask or look for the following things: oil in coolant, coolant in oil, coolant additive, major oil leaks, how often was oil changed, how it starts cold.

Hey captjohn,
Mine checks out pretty good however I noticed that it takes longer for the glowplug light to go out when it's cold 20-30 seconds compared to 10-15 seconds on warm days. I guess that is normal.
It did have a pretty bad oil leak but I replaced the valve cover gaskets which took care of that.
Anything else us newbs should be on the lookout for?

I think I prefer metal valve covers and a fuel filter I can reach... JMO;-)
The gps shouldnt cycle longer than 10 seconds even when its cold. If it needs more to start you can turn the key again and cylcle them a second time. 20 seconds would be melting the gps probably.
