96 Powerstroke, after it warms up the transmission sometimes shifts hard between 1st and 2nd sometimes it doesn’t. The other day when it shifted from 2nd to 3rd it acted like it was in neutral. I shifted to neutral and then back into gear with no change. I pushed the overdrive button and it then shifted down and then back up into 3rd. After I had no more problems the rest of that trip. This seams to be a common event when the truck get warmed up.
A couple of weeks ago I was having issues in overdrive where it would shift down and stay there with my O/D light flashing and stay that way for about 2 miles then it would clear up. I borrowed a friends snap on modus scanner as it didn’t have any transmission codes stored. Any body have any ideas?? I’m at a total loss, thinking more electrical or valves sticking, fluid is good and not burnt.

If your OD light was flashing you have codes stored in there. You need to find a scanner that will read them. I would look at your connector and wiring for any obvious damage or a loose connector. I hope much smarter folks than myself will come along to help you out.
The first step is to get the codes read. The places that read codes free cannot read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
Used a Snapon Modus tool. No codes were found. Called a transmission shop they said that on these trucks the transmission codes don’t store and that they erase when the truck shuts off. I have ran the truck hard this weekend, and it hasn’t acted up. This just seems to be so intermittent, but enough I don’t want to take the truck far from home.
I guess I’ll drive the **** out of it and then rush to shop and see if they can pull codes when it shifts hard, and won’t shift up when I acts up again.
My understanding is that trucks from 1996 could be either OBD1 or OBD2. My '97 is OBD1 (f-superduty, was OBS/OBD1 in '97) and has a plug that hangs down from under the dash.
