I have a 1990 5.8 4x4. The truck does not like to go into OD and wont shift past second gear. The fluid looks good, but I know nothing about transmissions. Please help. Thank you in advance.

 

My suggestion would be to pull Codes. The control for the E4OD is completely electronic and often malfunctions will trigger fault codes. This helps pinpoint the root of the problem.

 

Codes are your starting point. With a warm engine get codes from the three areas KOEO, CM, KOER.

 

I checked for codes a while ago when the check engine light was on but the codes had nothing to do with the transmission. The light is not on now so I am not getting a reading.

 

Transmission shifting is also a function of engine codes. We have to have a happy engine to have a happy shifting transmission. We can have diagnostic codes even if the check engine light is not on, especially in continuous memory (CM).
