I have a 2001 3/4 pickup. Sometimes the over drive light flashes. When it flashes it shifts really hard and sometimes it won't shift into 4th until I mash the overdrive button. Sometimes the light doesn't flash at all and it doesn't have any trouble shifting at all. Is it a solenoid? Or wiring issues?
It's impossible to say. Get the codes read and then we can point you in the right direction. The places that read codes free CANNOT read the codes you need. You need either a good independent auto repair shop or a Ford dealer.
Then you're not scanning it with a reader capable of pulling the codes. The parts store OBD-II readers won't read them. You need a scanner that you'd find in a "good independent auto repair shop or a Ford dealer" as Mark said.
You can also read them for free with an app called Torque Pro for your Android and a bluetooth adapter. There is also an app called Forscan for Apple products and a wifi adapter. The adapters can be found on amazon and the apps are on the phones' app stores.
If the OD light is flashing, I guarantee there are codes to be read.
