Will 2nd key programmed at hardware store work to make 3rd key?
I'm bummed about the master key because it was an unused first generation key (I always cut new keys from a "New" master
key, and keep one for each vehicle). They also got my license, credit cards, and many other things, some irreplaceable.
So. I went to a McClendon's Hardware store, paid the $75 (plus tax!) to get another key cut and programmed.
They used the only key I had left, put it into a machine, and programmed a new key. But after reading, I'm worried
that all I got was a clone of the key they used, not an actual unique 2nd key.
Does the 2nd key have to be programmed in the car by a locksmith, or will some of the programming machines create
a unique key? Not knowing is killing me, but the "3rd key" is at home, cut & waiting to be programmed.
If I can't program it myself, I am going to be one EXTREMELY upset customer, because the whole reason
I spent $75 is because it was a one time event. Even if I get a refund, I wasted a lot of time, and ended up
late for work.
Part of the long story... the master key was in my backpack because the hardware store wouldn't cut
a blank that I provided (back when I COULD HAVE programmed a 3rd key). I was planning on looking
for another hardware store when the key got stolen (along with one of my blanks).

If so, I would try getting 2 transponder key blanks from an ebay auction for $11.
Search for - Replacement Uncut Ignition Chipped Key Transponder Blank for H84-PT 40 Bit 2006 F150 or a subset of that.
Take the key blanks to Home Depot and they will likely cut them for free as they only charge for the key blanks.
Make sure they will unlock the doors.
Then find a place - Ford, locksmith, software ??? that will add the 2 new unique transponder key codes to the accepted key code list in the PATS.
Or pay to add one of your new keys and add the 3rd yourself.
I've done this for our Exped and Excur which both came with 2 keys and now have 4 that work fine.
When adding a 4th key you have to insert the 1st and 2nd to start the process, add the 3rd and add the 4th all in sequence.
You can't just add the 4th.
It didn't have anything when I looked, but I'll check again, and will put 2000 Ford Excursion (Limited), 7.3L Powerstroke,
I tried the keys last night - I was not able to program any of the ones that I had cut.
The programmed one I bought at the hardware store yesterday was (almost certainly) a clone.
I have 5 of the blank keys from online (Amazon). The hardware store would only cut blanks that
they sold. That's how I got my master key stolen - I left it in my backpack after they refused
to cut the blank - even though I told them I didn't need it programmed, and they didn't have them in colors.
I returned it this morning, with no problem - just told them it doesn't work correctly.
I will just bite the bullet and get a real key from the dealer.
I'm going to look through all of my keys one more time - I must have had a 2nd key when I programed the
one I have now (and the one my wife lost).
One of the keys I bought online has a remote built into the key head - but it won't fit because the metal
part is too short and the plastic part too thick. I'll make it work (with a dremel tool) after I get the ability to
program keys again.
I will try Lowe's and Home Depot to get the one uncut key I have left cut to shape, and then I will have
7 keys total (8 if I find another master key in my collection of many keys).
I miss the days of simple all metal keys.
Though some day my smart phone will be all I need to start all of my cars.
Someone should design that - a box that can be installed in any car, and a phone app
that lets you open & start the car - maybe even from far away (like a long distance remote start)
the profile, the vehicle fields were set to 2006 F150 (maybe it defaulted to that?).
Anyway, I fixed it. Thanks for noticing and letting me know!

KEY PROGRAMMING: (Better check owner's manual)
**You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed** Often times a locksmith "clones" your initial key, and does not program it as a 2nd key. This matters because your current key and a cloned key will not work to program a 3rd key, the truck has to see two different keys to go into program mode.
1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.
3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.
4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE second and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.
6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5

4. Remove second working key and insert the new key before ten seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it on for one second and turn back to OFF.

FORD REMOTE – THIS PROCEDURE RESETS ALL REMOTES FOR THE VEHICLE. ALL FUNCTIONING REMOTES WILL HAVE TO BE REPROGRAMMED DURING THE PROCEDURE There are a few different procedures that will program your remotes depending on what vehicle that you have. You can find your exact procedure in your owners manual. If you do not have your owners manual you can try any of the procedures below until you find the one that works for your vehicles
Make sure that you don’t press the brake pedal at any time during or before the procedure.
Procedure A:
1.Close all doors, then open drivers door and press the Unlock button on driver’s door while it is open, insert key into ignition.
2.Turn ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times within 8 seconds, with the 8th time ending in RUN. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming mode. (if the door locks do not cycle, then it was done incorrectly. You must start over by removing key and beginning from step 1) (Off is the position where you can remove your key, RUN is the position just shy of starting your car.) 3.Within 10 seconds press any button on the first keyless remote to be programmed. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming. If you only have one remote then skip to step 5.
4.Within 10 seconds, press any button on the second keyless remote. Door locks will cycle again to confirm programming. Repeat step 4. for all other remotes.
5.Turn ignition to OFF. Locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode. *If this does not work try the procedure with the door closed.
Procedure B:1. Fasten seatbelt and close all doors
2. Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN 4 times within 3 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition OFF. The system will chime to confirm programming mode.
4. Within 10 seconds, press and hold any button on first keyless remote. The system will chime once to confirm programming.
5. Within 10 seconds, press and hold any button on second keyless remote. System will chime once to confirm programming.
6. Turn ignition to RUN to exit programming mode.
Please note: All steps should be performed in fairly rapid succession. If you never get the initial chime or door lock cycle, that means the vehicle has never entered programming mode. You should remove key from ignition, open and close the door and start over.
Now with my 04 Ex, I am once again with only 1 key. Should be less this time, I hope. Hopefully, I will not have a need for a 3rd key.
My wife found a locksmith that cut the 4 that are done.
She didn't ask about programming them - but she was using an all metal key that I had made directly from
the master key before it got stolen.
Having that all metal key as a pattern is nice - it's easy to store it.
But the keyless entry on my truck makes it not really necessary to have a backup that won't start the vehicle.
It'll go in storage as a substitute master key.
