When I bought my used Expy, it only came with one key and one fob. I researched fob programming and it looked pretty simple, so I bought two more.
I was looking at getting an additional key made at Home Depot and they told me it was a "chipped" key and wanted 69.99 for one. I declined at the moment due to being short on funds. I did some digging around and see that they keys need to be be programmed by the dealer and or a locksmith.....would that be the same case if I bought one at Home Depot? Would I be spending over 70.00 for a key and still have to have it programmed and mated to the PATS?
If I only have one key...what options do I really have? Seen some key blanks on eBay, but their programing instructions say I need at least two keys to start with.....
didn't go through the other thread, but i did just pay the ford dealer to make me another key. I, too, only got one key with my new to me expedition.
the ONLY way to get another key made if you do not already have two, is to have it done at a ford dealer.
total for the key and programing was about $88 the key was $25, the balance of that was paying the technician to program the key to the vehicle.
i also bought a new key fob from them, which was about $55. but they programmed it for free.
all total, i now have two keys, two fobs, and $145 less in my pocket.
soon i will go back and get another key made for $25, and program it myself, that way i'll always have two if i lose one. if you have two programmed keys, you can always program another yourself.... but if you only have one ... it will cost you some money.
I read recently to insert the new key into the ignition and turn it to ON (not start) and leave it there for about 15-20 minutes until the theft light stopped flashing. After the flashing stops, remove the key, wait one minute and it is now programmed. I have not had the chance to try this and I cannot confirm that it works. But if you already have a new cut key then it is worth a try.

Not sure where you are but Home Depot's in Calif do not carry or cut chipped keys.
Most big locksmiths however, have the laptop program, hooking up to your OBD terminal and processing. It takes about 15 mins or so to complete and 69 bucks.

You need to include the year of your vehicle in your sig line so folks know what you have and are asking for help on. There were three PATS types used on the Expys covered by this forum, each having different criteria.
You'll get conflicting answers because folks will respond based on what they have found worked on their Expy.

Thank You for including the year of your vehicle.
The 1998 Expy has what is called the PATS Type "A". You only need to have one good working (programmed) key and then you can program your spare key without the need for a fancy scan tool.
You need to be sure that your spare key is a PATS Type "1" key and is Ford qualified.
Put your good working key in the ignition and cycle it from "OFF" to "RUN" and back to "OFF". Cycle spare key to "RUN". Done (as long as you don't have any aftermarket electronics).
Unfortunately, I went to the dealer today and dropped 139.59 on a new key, so now I have 2 Ford keys that work the Expy. Let me tell ya...it was a horrible experience.....they held us hostage for over 90 minutes....gee wiz.
Anywho, I ordered 2 keys from eBay (reputable seller) and they are on their way. I asked around here locally and no one wants to touch the keys (cut them). Im sure Ill find a way to get them cut.

Bought two blanks off eBay (not sure if I mentioned) and got them in lightning fast. The seller was bbblocks and I got them for like 12.00 or so shipped. Luckily, I have a certified locksmith at my job and he cut the keys for free. He also made mention of something about how Ford cut my 2nd key that was all jacked up. He was speaking under his breath and I didn't catch it all...shotty work in his opinion.
Anywho, my locksmith buddy also let me take a pic of the programming instructions for my 98 Expy (see below). Followed them to the "T" and BAM...I now have (4) working keys...Woo hoo.
Sorry...couldn't get pic to rotate even after going through paint and another pic editing program.
