I very recently bought a new 06 F150 scab. I wante a 3rd key cause, well, I wanted a 3rd key. I went to the dealership with the 2 keys in my hand. I was told it would take several hours & $130 . When I asked if I couldn't program the key myself, I was told you need 3 keys to program them yourself. I know that 2 used to be the magic number of keys needed. Has this changed with late models. I wanted to call them lying SOB's , but wasn't sure of my facts.
BTW, it was Champion Ford on the Katy Frwy, Katy Tx.
it took me about 30 seconds for programing 2 keys......you're right they are a lying sob.....besides it only cost me 36.00 dollars for those 2 extra keys......
Here's the procedure to add a key. You must have 2 working keys to do this. The info comes from Ilco blank key reference catalog.
Add Duplicate Key (Requires two working keys)
1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.
3. Remove the existing key and, within five seconds, insert a second key and
turn it to ON (RUN) then back OFF.
4. Insert the new key before ten seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON
(RUN). Leave it on for one second and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for three seconds to indicate that the new key
has been successfully programmed.

Hi garvicmos and welcome to FTE! You have to go to the dealer to get a second key programmed. I believe it is around $100 for the key and programming. Good luck!
We just bought a used explorer Ltd and picked it up last night we were supprised that there was only one key and one remote. The dealer is trying to contact original owner - I see now that this may be more important than I thought the 2003 exploere probably has the PAT? We were hoping the dealer separated the keys so for extra safety so they dont looks them UG $100 to program a blank ? wow
E-mailed my dealers service manager and asked for a quote to program a single pre cut PATS key.
He left me a voicemail at home - $37.95 Not as bad as I figured
Found two New Blanks on Ebay from locksmith out of Charlotte NC for $34 including shipping so here we go ...
Figured I would get the keys cut at hardware store
Get One key programmed at dealer
Program the 2nd at home
Stash one of them in a lock box !!
After I get this done I'll FW the dealer info - want to make sure they come through first
