I have a new to me 2000 X and it only came with one key. Two remotes, but only one key. I got a blank PATS key online, but it appears that you need two working key to program it yourself. Is there any trick I am missing that will allow me to reprogram the blank with only one working key???
you can go get your key cut and then take it to the dealership for them to program. it shouldn't be that much they charged me $75 for a new key cut it and programmed it then i got the spares online and did them myself.
I also just recently purchased a 2000 X and only got 1 key. I bought a PATS key on Ebay had it cut for free at Walmart. The dealership wanted over 100 bucks to program. Local locksmith did it for 45 bucks in about 20 minutes.
I have never sold/traded in a car without giving the dealer both keys. I don't know that I have ever bought a used car from a dealer without them having to make a second key. What do they do with them?
Same thing that happens with the dryer... Put two socks in, and only one comes out
Actually I think its probably just another scam to get the dealer an extra quick $100
But at least the PATS keys are cheap! I also have a Prius (GASP) haha and it has special transmitter keys that you don't even need to take out of your pocket to turn on the car... you just have to press the button the dash... Its pretty cool, but replacement keys are on the order of $200 each...

I was robbed. My Ex came with 2 fobs,, 1 key. Locksmith charged $125 to make extra key. I have 2 but what a price. Jim
Buy a couple extra and program them in. I think you can program at least 4 at once. If one knows about the 2 keys needed PATS system, you could make the second key a requirement for the sale.
Thanks for the replies and I thought I would need someone to program the other key. I am trying to decide if it is worth it to me, as the X is not a daily driver.
Like Afree, I use my prius as my daily (60 miles round trp to work), so I much like the 49 miles per gallon. However, my X with the 4.3 does tow the toy hauler like there is nothing behind me. SOOOOO much better than my Expedition.
The method to program a key is in your owner manual but if i am not mistaken you have to have 3 keys in your hand 2 that are programmed and one that is not. you put in the first key turn the ignition to on but do not start it, then turn off and repeat with the next good key then turn off and repeat with the first not programmed key. that is it. but if you are doing more then one key you have to start all over again and programm the next key.

When you buy a used car they do have 2 keys, 1 goes to you and 1 goes to the finance company who did your loan, if you default , they have the spare key. I asked a man at Auto Zone the same question I just bought a 2007 FX4. 1 key as well, what is the world coming too when you buy a good used Ford Truck and get 1 key!! But I do love my Ford Truck
