If I were in your shoes, I'd go with a Fox 2.0 with a reservoir up front and a reservoir with an adjuster in the rear. Order them from Accutune and tell the you want a softer ride and what you're using it for. They'll model out the valving, build them and ship them out and you won't have to tinker at all. Just crank the adjusters up when you're towing and back down when you're unloaded. Best of both worlds and not that expensive comparatively speaking.
my problem might be expressing to Accutune how soft a ride I would want until I have actually driven the truck. Probably my best bet would be the Rancho 9000xl’s which would allow me to adjust until I found the right fit for me. Already there are enough testimonials on this site of people stating what they accomplished with their Settings when unloaded and their adjustments to when they were hauling a heavy load.

I’m running 5/3 right now but usually run 3or4/2. I will be going back to that as I prefer the ride softer when not towing my fifth wheel.

I ordered the Rancho 9000 XL’s. Seems like the simplest fix for my simple needs. They were on sale and there is also a $50 cash back on the purchase (Visa card) so the net was $340 for the 4.

Proper valved shocks get very firm in the winter.

The little 1" pistons in little OEM shocks don't show it as much, because they're such pathetic little shocks with not nearly enough damping. But when you get into real shocks with larger pistons, oil thickness is much more easier felt. To the point where Carli offers different valving for canuks and Alaskan's.
