Is there realy a difference in shocks?

I'm looking for some new shocks for my truck. I see that there are several different brands of shock and specialty shocks.

What is a good shock to put on my truck. I do go off road on some pretty bumpy rocky mountain roads but I don't get do any serious wheeling.

been my experience that yes there is a very definate difference in shocks, and for a truck that sees any offroad stay away from any stock replacement type shock IE monroes, napa brand etc. everyone has a preference but about any of the aftermarket shocks such as Rancho, superlift, trailmaster, rough country etc, that are off road shocks would work fine you don't have to go to the top of the line, a good rule of thumb would be if they build lift kits, thier shocks would probably work, and live on a truck that sees some offroading, but if they don't or even worse if the build lowering kits, thier shocks probably wouldn't survive on a 4x4 for long

That's the same rule of thumb I use. I have had a couple of set of ranchos on different trucks, and when I got the rancho lift kit from Desert Rat for my F250, it actually came with their house brand shocks "Desert Rattler." They ride almost identical to the RS5000s I have had, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are made at the same factory. I would say get the ones that are in your price range. The 5000s are only about $35 a piece or so. Ted

Personally I like Bilsteins. I also have Rancho RS9000X's an like those too. I don't care much for KYB's.

From: Wanatah In,
I have also had this question, My question is are most of the aftermarket shocks made by Hecketthorn? Rancho,Skyjacker, desert rat, procomp and there are some others have the exact same specs as the hecketthorns, they also look identical. The prices are much differant though. Does anyone know this for a fact? I want to get some better than stock shocks but if a majority of the off road shocks are the same shocks I am going to go with the cheapest ones.

I have Rancho RSX's on my 95 f150 4x4 and I am very pleased with them. The RS9000's are great shocks also as you can adjust them but they are more expensive and for what I do I don't need to adjust my shocks. A lot of people reccommend Bilsteins as they are excellent shocks too.
