What thermostat

Ok, so I've been here before asking this question. I can't get any heat in the cab. I've checked the door and temp levers and they both work. ( the system is non-a/c)The temp dial hardly moves. The hoses get hot. This is another motor in the truck.(had the same problem with original motor, both are 351M) I'm thinking it could be the thermostat. I'm using a 165 degree. Should I replace it with a 195? Will the 195 run to hot in summer?

195 is the stock temp. 165 is way too cold and should never be used in a street engine.
And yes that is why you are getting no heat.

180* is safe, 195* is fine if you want extra heat. Anything under 180* will appreciably reduce heater output and increase engine wear. No reason to run that cold a thermostat unless you are fighting detonation on a high compression engine.

Also, for extra blow motor RPM and air output you can wire the blower motor up through a relay.

Thanks! Think I'll go with the 195. Maybe this weekend.

For what it’s worth, I’d run the 180*

180 is too cold there is a reason they came with a 195 from the factory and have since the 1950's

180 T-stats lead to longer warm ups increased engine wear and shortens oil life. The ONLY time you should run a 180 is if you are trying to mitigate over heating when running a 195.

Engine wear increases drastically as soon as you get under 180F you want to get the engine temp up to op temp as quickly as possible.

The results from the below chart are at just 60 hours or 3600 miles at 60MPH and that is cylinder bore wear. Wanna shave tens of thousands of miles off the life span of your engine run a 180 or colder t-stat.

195° is what it shipped with. There is no advantage to running a colder temperature thermostat and all kinds of problems if you do.

No heater output is one of them.

For the record, I run a 195* thermostat in my truck. I live in the South East, where temperatures in the Summer are often well above 100* and humidity even worse. The engine was bored 0.060, and I don't have any issues.

If that is what you think, then the only thing staggering would be your lack of knowledge.

The correct thermostat specifically for 351C/351M/400:

D0AZ-8575-A .. 192 degree Thermostat (Motorcraft RT-139) / Obsolete ~ Available NOS and from some auto parts stores.

1970/79 Passenger Cars; 1977/79 F100/350; 1978/82 Bronco; 1980/82 F150/350 & Econoline.

Ford never offered a 180 t/stat for these engines, so I have to wonder what the hell t/stat you guys are using.

What thermostat

So I changed the thermostat this morning. Found that I had put in a Mr. Gasket 180 deg. Put in a 195 and WOW! I now get heat in my truck after 14 years. Thanks!

Agreed, and may I add.... staggering pompous responses. If we "knew it all", there would be no need for this, or any forum.
