Engine Thermostat/Temperature

I just made the trip up north with the truck for the first time and am having an issue with the heater working. First of all its an aftermarket heater in the truck. The thing would not get very hot so I started poking around with under the hood and noticed that the motor and hoses were not getting very hot. I could place my hand on the motor and hoses and not get burnt, which seems like it is too cool to me even though it was 10-15* outside. Sounds to me like a thermostat issue if the truck is not getting up to temp. I plan to install an aftermarket temp gauge, but thought I'd get your guy's thoughts first

Sounds like you have a t-stat stuck open. Make sure you get the proper one from either Ford or IH dealership. DON'T GO to NAPA or some other parts store. They, as I understand it, require a special one.

The corrct thermostat is 195 degrees.

And the heater should be able to run you out of the cab at 10 or 15 outside.

O'Reilly sells OEM thermostats, they are the only people i will go to other than the dealership or IH/NS. O'reilly had my starter for my 6.9, new gp, injectors and all the like. At any rate. They sell all OEM stuff. I would invest in a 195 thermostat. That will warm you up and out of the truck when working right.

Diesel engine coolant temperature at the top of the radiator where hose attaches after high rpm or under load condition for 20 minutes should be (195-237*F) 91-114*C nice time to have a temperature reading point and shoot tool.

Did the PO replace the thermostat too, overheating could mean the wrong one installed....... need a Ford or IH Tstat only.

CAUTION:
The specified/required thermostat does not contain an internal bypass, since the bypass is located in the cylinder block. Whenever the thermostat is replaced, it is mandatory that only Motorcraft E5TZ-8575-C or Navistar 1807974C94 thermostat be installed.
Motorcraft E5TZ-8575-C = 192* fully open = 212* (best for fuel economy and performance.)
Navistar 1807974C94 = 180* fully open = 200* (best for running cooler should you find the need for your application.)

in case its time for a couple radiator hoses, cap and flush:

I usually plow with my defrost on high and the drivers side window down at temps down to 10 degrees.

That keeps my windows from fogging up from all the snow I track in the cab as it melts.

I have no idea if the PO did anything with the t-stat. I ordered a new one from Ford today and hopefully will be able to get it in there tomorrow. The truck defiantly was not getting anywhere near 195*, like I said I could hold my hand on the motor and hoses and it was pretty cool. Im gonna add a cover for the front grill as well, did that for my dads powerstroke and it made a big difference

If you are not working the engine, a diesel does not make much heat.
So the upper radiator hose may not be that warm.
The lower radiator hose will be much cooler, even in the summer.

The heater hoses however should be rather warm after a mile or so driving down the highway.

Even those were not getting all that warm.

I installed a Kragen T-Stat after doing my head gaskets to get my truck back on the road even after reading that all the aftermarket stuff was garbage. There was a waste of time and money swapping out for a overpriced dealership one if this actually is the case...

Ahh, that's right. OEM vs the cheap stuff. Glad to know the extra work wasn't for nothing...
