Well, I am making some headway on the $800 truck. Very little, seeing as when I fix one thing, something else catches my attention. I am thinking about replacing the thermostat. My engine temp almost never gets above cold, and my heater blows warm air, but I am used to ford heaters putting out hot air. The hose from the radiator to the thermostat housing gets warm, so I don't think that is is stuck (at least not all of the way closed). Will getting a 195 degree thermostat do anything helpful, and will it hurt anything when the outside temps peak 100 degrees this summer. Remember, I am a rookie, so no laughing. I did manage to replace the fuel pump and the egr without blowing anything up....
a 195 stat is probably the recomended one for your truck what a stat does is keep your engine at a constant operating temp and keep the coolant in the block/heater long enough to heat it up running without a stat is actually worse for your engine as it is harder for your engine to stay at the correct temp for it's highest effiencyit won,t make any differance in hot weather if your truck cools like it should
Thanks guys. I will tear her apart tomorrow. The 10 degree weather here in Utah is brutal without a decent heater. I've been away from Wyoming too long, I'm turning into a wuss.
I got the stant the comes in the box at advance auto. It works good. They make universal stants that come all shrink wrapped, and are about $2.50.. I think they are junk..
Just to be sure you might want to put new t-stat in a pot of water and boil to make sure it will open, I put one in once to ck and it started to click and then it stopped halfway open would not budge, after it cooled try again no luck, I threw it away got another did test no prob. never hurts to ck.
I changed the thermostat today. I ended up doing it the messy way, but when I took a test drive afterwards, the engine came right to center on the temp guage and the heater acted like a true ford heater. I think that is one of the main reasons I like fords so much, the heaters heat up immediately rather than getting hot just as you reach your destination.
thats is the way its supposed to be. The only problem I'd had with fords is the blowers suck..
Just on a side note, I installed a mechanical temp gauge on my truck, and it runs between 193-196, which is good. Put the blower on, it'll drop down to 190. btw, this is at 5 degree F. Just an observation, that the heater core must not be too plugged.!
Working on a 83' Bronco with a 302 and we just put a new edelbrock intake and 600 cfm carb on it... Replaced the therm with a 195' from Autozone and I think we got a bad one.. Now it's running hotter than before... Around the "M" in NORMAL on the temp gauge... I looked at the old one that came out and it had 192' marked on it... I told my friend that we should put in a 180' considering this truck has a history of overheating in the summertime, we replaced the water pump and had the radiator cored out and a couple of the coils are blocked last summer and it was fine...
Anyone put a 180' in? I had a 195' in my 1998 Chevy and have to use a 160' in it now to use a the performanc computer chip... Just notice it doesn't have the blazing heat in the winter that it used to but i live in Virginia so it doesn't get below 20 very much here...
I'd put a real gauge on it. I've seen some trucks run at between R and M, and my old truck used to run between the N and O. i put a mechincal on mine, and I know its running between 190-195.
I have tried many different thermostats, and have had the best performance from a factory ford unit. Haven't had a problem yet, and they don't cost much more. About $8.00 retail and $4.50 wholesale.
Factory 'stats are best. in buick 3.8s, the aftermarkets never work right (my dad has own 5 buicks with 3.8s, he knows). I've had good luck with the $8 stants one in my truck, the cheap ones are junk..
