I wasn't aware at the time so I put a bottle of red 911 in and towed it to a heated garage and plugged it in. Being 8pm on New Year's Eve no one was open to get a set of filters. Let it sit in the garage (45 degrees) over night and started rt up and ran fine but the check engine light won't go off. It's been a constant 10 during the day back home and below zero at night. I am going to get a set of filters tomorrow and change them to see if that will make the cel go off. If not it's gonna have to go to the dealer.
Drain the water separator and do the purge cycling. I was in a similar scenario up in Iowa last week and this helped me with the CEL. Of course, if you're changing filters, you will need to do this anyway so might wait until then.

A friend of mine bought a brand new Duramax on Monday and it was towed to the dealer on Tuesday because it wouldn't stay running... he gelled up too on his 1 day old truck..Not only felt bad for him buying a Chevy but having it towed on the 2nd day of ownership must have sucked lol.

I hope it's not his first diesel, he's probably feeling some buyer's remorse!

Changing filters won't make your Check Engine light go off. Once you get the "reduced engine power" message, the Check Engine light comes on and stores a code for "low fuel rail pressure." You just need to clear the code with a code reader. Any generic code reader will do, AutoZone will do it for you free, or FORScan can do it if you have that.

My Check Engine light was on, and I cleared the code myself. I've had no problems since, but we're expecting -28F this Saturday night after we get snow today.

This is the problematic warning (my Check Engine light came on almost immediately after this photo was taken:

These new modern trucks are amazing, and sometimes I think they are too smart for their own good. Years back when we felt a diesel engine running poorly in the cold we simply changed filters, added No. 1 fuel and an anti-gel to the tank and off we went. Of course, that was back in the day of unit injectors, now with these common rail systems I definitely can see why we need smart trucks to monitor their health.

It's not the common rail or injectors that fail with plugged filters, it's the high pressure pump. Pressures are much higher, and without normal fuel flow to the pump available, there is no lubrication and the pistons destruct. That's why there are pressure sensors monitoring and cutting off engine ability to rev with low pressure.

UPDATE. When I questioned them on the HPFP they had the Service Manager call me back. He said the Service Writer was mistaken and it was the pump in the tank that needed replaced, as I had diagnosed. Still don’t have my truck back but at least they are on the right track now.
So the saga continues. When the truck wouldn’t start on December 24th I noted that when the dealer had worked on the truck a week before they had neglected to put the cover back on the fuse box under the hood. It was packed full of snow and ice. I suspected that this may be part of the ne start issue but wasn’t sure. The dealer admitted yesterday that they had replaced the fuel pump but that didn’t fix the problem. They figured out the module in the fuse box is no good. Big Suprise.....not. The module is not serviced separate so they have to replace the whole fuse box, which of course is on back order.

Just to follow up with a final comment:

On January 3rd, I sent an email to Cumberland Farms headquarters from a contact link on their site. I explained the issues my truck was having with their fuel, and asked if they were using a winter blend of diesel and what the ratio of #1 and #2 was. I never asked for anything but if they were using winter diesel and what the blend was.

Several days went by without a response, and I basically thought...yup, typical big company. Ignore the customer.

Then I received an email from a rep from Cumberland Farms, who apologized for the problems I had, and told me she would write up a claim with the company's insurance company. I wasn't sure if they would reimburse me for the fuel filters or just my last tank of fuel...but the rep stated she would have the insurance company contact me.

Today, I received a call from the insurance company, who is reimbursing me for the full cost of the fuel filters and over $100 worth of diesel.

My opinion of Cumberland Farms has greatly increased. This is excellent customer service. The rep told me I should not be out of pocket for expenses caused by their mistakes. I will now continue to buy my fuel from them and recommend them to my friends and coworkers. I sent them the fuel filter receipt and they are going to send me a check...

WOW!!! Never-Ever thought CF would have stepped up tot he plate on an issue such as this..... There may have been another person with an issue that come forward also? Anyway, glad for a positive outcome, frustrating but, positive in the end.

She never said what the blend was, just stated they are aware of the problem and that a number of other people with diesel vehicles have also complained.

It's very hard to prove that a particular company's fuel caused a problem. Yes, they can see I purchased fuel from them on certain dates, but how do they know I didn't also purchase fuel from some little mom and pop station somewhere else that caused the problem? In this case, of course I did not...but in any even, I'm extremely pleased with this outcome.
