...well...

The truth be known, GM (and its subsidiaries) was one of the largest suppliers to .

But one still has to uphold his/her/its/mutants honor...

BENDIX- SAGINAW - ROCHESTER

EDIT-

Something else just shook loose. Wanna know why FORD was so slow to go to electrics wipers? DELCO couldn't produce enough to supply FOMOCO also.

Ford supplied transmissions to a lot of unlikely suspects, somebody had a factory fire at one point and couldn't fill the orders. I'm sure seeing "FoMoCo" raised some eyebrows.

That was HYDRA-MATIC in 1954(?). FORD had to put the BW design MERC-O-MATIC into the LINC (3S vs 4S).

PONTIAC did use the FORD 3.03 3S in the sixties.

When Durant was ousted from GM in 1920 (for the 2nd and last time), Sloane took over as prexy.

I'd have to go back and read it again after 15 years but my history of General Motors said they bought Cadillac to get the patents on the electric starter.
At one time they had made a deal with Henry the first to buy Ford. A price was set but when it came time to pay, GM wanted to pay with GM stock like they had with several other acquisitions. Henry said no way, pay with money or the deal is off. GM couldn't swing the deal.

AFAIK, the sale of Cadillac to GM had nothing to do with the self starter. There's no mention of it in Durant's biography.

"Billy" Durant purchased Cadillac in 1909 (an all cash transaction), self starter wasn't introduced until 1912.

Durant liked to "swap stock" for his purchases, but Henry wanted 3 million cash. Durant couldn't come up with this amount.

Cadillac was originally named the Henry Ford Co.

But when Ford left the company in a huff, Henry Martyn Leland became prexy and Chief Engineer, renamed the company after the founder of Detroit: Antoine dela Motte Cadillac.

Leland left Cadillac in 1916 because Durant didn't want to assemble Liberty V-12 aircraft engines for the war effort.

Leland started a new company, naming it after his favorite president, Lincoln Motor Co.

Starter is installed but not engaging.

I apparently have started a hot thread. I went to a friend's house with the starter and we get the gear drive installed. I went home and installed the starter assembly. It's spinning but not engaging the flywheel. Am I suppose to turn the gear drive assembly a little bit before install? I had it fully compressed when I put it back into the block.

Hm, it could be you have a bum starter. Even "new" rebuilt starter. In fact it's not unusual, sad to say. It has to be able to spool up fast enough to get the bendi, er, the starter drive to extend and then engage the flywheel. Is the starter drive new as well? It's always best to replace an old bend, er, starter drive when replacing starter. It's not mandatory, but it keeps everything on the same sheet of music.

Were it me I'd make sure the battery is serviceable and fully completely 100% charged using external charger, solenoid itself grounded to firewall clean and tight, cables and ground points are bulletproof etc etc etc. The idea being to eliminate other possibilities before crawling under the truck and remove & reinstall starter, maybe core it and buy another. Starter needs a clean metal to metal connection with block for ground. Let us know what you find.

What he said...

You need to perform a STARTER MOTOR DRAW TEST (GOOGLE). If the drive makes ring gear contact and doesn't crank, most likely it hasn't enough juice (or the actual motor is defective). The drive gear will not return unless spun by engine start.

I have a small local shop who rebuilds starters and alternators. I take all my stuff to him rather than trust poor quality over the counter stuff. He is getting old and one day that carry over from days of service will sadly be gone.
