HELP MPG HELP

hey to all. my F350 CC long bed single RR gives me on a good day 8 to 10 MPG. 1997, 285K, 2nd owner, NO load, tow and light foot. No excessive smoke, decent power, new filters and oil, clean EBP tube, perfect climate here, etc. This truck was never sold here in Mexico therefore NO scanners or mechanics here to go to. Ford agency here no can do (too old, no software, buy a new one etc.) and International agency here say that, yes its their engine BUT Ford tweeked it with all the periferals and they cant help. I have looked, investigated, researched on the net from that guy in Blewmyford GA to other sites like powerstroke.org. I am hopping that this site just might give me a clue to this problem. I AM DESPERATE and will be very happy if I could talk with someone to help me with this. johnstelly@yahoo.com . I am old and somewhat a newby both with internet forums and my truck. PLEASE, answer and maybe send me your tel number so I can pick your brain. Its easy for me to call you from here. Just say when. All my best to you and yours, God bless and thanks in advance.

I'm not a fuel mileage expert at all but I have a few questions. Auto or manual trans? What is your axle gear ratio? Two or 4WD? Running the stock tire size? Maybe we can get someone smarter than me going on your problem.

ever do a compression test?

do you have excessive blow by when you remove the oil fill cap?
put it on upside down and see if it blows off at idle and at 2k RPM

Jim, Thanks for the "very Knowledgeable". All I know about diesels are from this excellent forum.

"salsa" thats a good one John. LOL. What part of Mexico are you located. You are right here is very difficult to get a scanner which comunicate with our PSDs, I have in my truck the Interceptor (Aeroforce) scan gauge and thats the way I can try to make a diagnosis.

The main problem about the MPG in Mexico is the quality of diesel, to your tranquility when I bought my truck the MPG was about 14-16 according to the USA records, and NEVER, never I can get that, I usually get 10 MPG as you do, load or unload, curiosly even towing (TT 7k pounds), even with the chip in economy, so you are not that bad.

Do you speak Spanish?. I hope that my comments make your issue more palatable.

ps Ill send you an e-mail, but I think that you will find out more good answers here in FTE.

Otro paisa vien benido friendo, as for your MPG issue, yes as Jose pointed out Mexican diesel even tho its not process Mexico is filthy and "watered" down by the corrupt PeMex workers. The best MPG ive seen hand calculated was 17.5 doing 60-65 MPH and driving like an old fart on take of and it was mostly highway with my old set up in 2500-6500 ft in elevation.

Also what gears does it have? 3.55? Or 4.10? Tire size? Driving habits?

well, hey, 17.5 vs 8 to 10 ???? BIG, ENORME, GIGANTESCO difference. I love new mexico. lived a little there and still have family there. mas arriba estan mis datos. mandame tus datos y charlamos un poco. We all seem to have similar trucks. I am still wondering about those little screens like the fuel bowl and the intakes inside the tanks. many questions do i have. " Portate mal pero quidate muy bien".

Just saw the info on gears and tire size. You sure you have 3.73 and not 3.55 or 4.10? My truck came from the factory with 4.10 and with the stock tire size 235 85 16 this thing could bearly do 13mpg highway once I went with 3.55 gearing thats when I saw the increase in MPG, also noting that I adjusted the PSOM to accomodate the 285 75 16 I have now to get accurate MPH reading. On every fill up add 2 stroke oil and see if that helps some and make sure you dont have boost leaks, fuel leaks and that your tires are at normal PSI like 55-65psi front and 70-80psi on the back.
Do you still have the Kitty cat and down pipe?
