I get most of the things imported from USA, I buy some in IH in Mexico, they have some things for the ford navistar motor.
"Still wana know about EBPV ????? mine is very hard to move." IDK if its OK that is hard to move, but when you start the engine, it closes by itself and you can see the movement (close/open) directly underhood, just check if it opens totally or partialy. I use it as a exhaust brake.
still getting BAD MPG!!! And now tranny is acting up. when starting from stop in D it starts in 2nd unless i drop down to 1. on the highway at 35 to 40 mph it wont drop down a gear to pass. Trans is automatic E4OD. any clue? is there a sensor that controls shifting? thanks
My son in ca has sent me 2 sets of washers that go on banjo of fuel pump. when they get here will install and see if this helps. Still getting about 8 MPG!!! Decent power, no smoke, light foot, etc etc. WHAT COULD IT BE???
Well, still the same old same old. 7.5 to 8.5 MPG. Good power, no smoke, light foot, good filters, etc etc. Also, I have other questoins and not sure to lump them together or post seperately .
I did a small highway run a few days ago and got 15 mpg!!!! I will have to try more times on the highway trying to fill at same station, pump, time of day etc. Can intown driving reduce by half ones mileage? It seems like a lot to me. I still havent changed the thermostat and truck always runs cool. Someone said that running at higher temps will help MPG ??? Also using straight 40 weight oil impedes the best performance of the injectors??? Any help will be appreciated .

John, running on highway will help in increased engine temps. Diesel engines need heat to run efficiently so YES, if it is running cool all the time, especially in town fix the problem. That is what the thermostat is for. A bad or open thermostat will keep the engine to cold and fuel differently. Describe cool, does the gauge get above the "N" mark, it should be around the middle of the gauge after 15 minutes of driving in your area, I would think.
NO NO NO . Never gets to the middle. I will try and get the hi temp (195 - 205 ? ) thermostat and change oil to the 15w 40. ??? is this thermostat very specific to this engine? 195 or 205? In the meantime would blocking off front of radiator with cardboard and watching temp gauge be an alternative to check ? thanks

John, I think the 205 is for the international water pump with the short stem, not compatible with the ford 97 water pump. The link Glenn posted (oldbird 1965) is what I have and works well. As Glenn mentioned if you tow heavy then it's probably not for you. Whatever you get make sure it's the long stem thermostat, I think ford makes a 193 but not sure. I have tried the cardboard thing but with little luck and it's really for cold - cold climates.
If I understand correctly, the Motorcraft thermostat is a 195, which I confirmed with a candy thermometer and a pot, with it starting to open at something like 198. (IDK how accurate the thermometer is, but that is close to what it should be, so I figured good enough). My 195 with fan & shroud will get up to the O and stay there no matter how hard I pull or how heavy the load. 205 runs closer to the R-M.
Keep in mind that the thermostat dictates the coolest your truck will run once it reaches operating temperature.
That was true with my truck Jarrett until I squeezed a 32 row 6.0 trans cooler in there and I'm picking up a lot of heat from it. I never used to hardly ever look at my temp gauge and now its a 'must do'. My trans stays nice and cool so I think the heat is affecting the radiator. I have to watch the temps now and the EGT's, its all a compromise now but that's OK. I've been told many times I shouldn't do what I'm doing with a 'old work truck'! lol
Cuernavaca is between 1450 to 1750 mts. The new fuel pump only lasted about 150 miles. trying to see if warranty still applies. COULD the screen filter in the FPR (next to fuel filter) cause the fuel pump to go out prematurely? STILL looking and will let you know how it goes. again THANKS!!!!
I was told by a fleet mechanic a dirty screen can hurt the pump
Why? it help keep the pump cool by drawing in a constant supply of fuel and purging air back to tank
I´M BACK and HELLO TO ALL. New 15-40 oil, all filters, coolant flush, Lucas additive, light foot, no load. I never got the 205 thermo but after few minutes gauge is in middle. 8 MPG!!!!!!! Little smoke under ¨peddle to the metal¨, decent power. BUT, to me the exhaust at idle smells funky like unburned fuel. INJECTORS ??????
IF SO what do you recommend? Again thanks to all. BTW MEXICO gets a new president TOMORROW for 6 years.
