Stumed trying to remove auto trans from under truck??

Stumped. In the process of removing a C4 trans from under my 68. The truck is up in the air on big floor jacks. The trans is free of the motor about 6" straight back and sitting level on my trans floor jack. Trans cross member is out. It won't come back any further. The top of the bell is against the tunnel/firewall. The bottom of the bell needs to come back 6 or 8" before it will clear the frame cross member. I can't tip it up or down much, the tail will hit the box floor or the other way the bell just wedges between the motor and the firewall. It's got to come out somehow. How do the tranny shops do it?

Do you have BOTH cross members out? I had to have both out when I pulled the C4 out of my truck last October.

I didn't know it was an option to remove that cross member. Part of the radius arm rear bracket is attached to it.

You have to remove both. Front is a PITA!

But then, it will fall out.

Grind the heads off the rivets and punch em out to remove that crossmember. Then bolt it back in.

Got it out and the trans down. What a pain, especially with the truck being raised up so high and having to reach up for those top bolts. And of course they're lock nuts so you have to use the wrenches all the way. I'll replace them with regular nuts and lock washers so at least I can finger tighten most off the way.

Now would be a good time to install new radius arm bushings.

No I removed the 4 torque converter bolts first. I also bolted a pc of flat steel in front of the torque converter so it can't slide off.

Everything was new when I built the truck two years ago.

I got my M5OD R2 5spd bolted up to the motor today. And bonus! the C4 and the 5spd are the same length so no driveshaft modification. I'm going to keep the driveshaft off the '90 donor truck though for future consideration.
