well I agree with you in that tracing the problem out is the best way I thought it might be the switch too and I replaced that along with the brake switch
I haven't tested from where the switch connects along the column will look into that today
this pic stows the tail harness unplugged
with the key on and a new fuse in turn signal spot I turned the blinker switch and hear the flasher running and then a snap it blew the fuse so that is where the short is
I was hoping for an easy fix
With that unplugged you removed the rear section from the picture.
You still have the front lights section & switch in the picture.
If you can unplug the switch and jump power to the front lights, each side thru the flasher, that would tell you if switch or front section.
You would need to know the pin out to the switch plug to do this.
Power in from flasher, power out to right & left lights.
If this does not blow the fuse then I would say 99.99% it is the switch.

first I want to thank all that had some input on this thread I found the where I was getting a short it was in the front left marker light two of the wires had broken up very close to the end of the socket I will replace that socket tomorrow and all will be well and good till the next problem that arises thanks again
Good to hear you found the issue.
By breaking it down in sections, rear harness & lights/signal switch/front harness & lights would have been the only way to find it.
Did you see the fuse blow when you turned on the light to that bad light?
Dave ----
yes I did I saw a few through the whole thing. I think you right with elect stuff you really have to just do testing like I did I can't believe I didn't see this in the beginning because its right there next to where I was working on the power steering pump I will buy a new socket tomorrow thanks again
I see your truck is coming along nicely looks good in primer
