I have stock air box right now and thinking of running this or some other version of the 6637 when its time to change the filter next. I like RiffRaff's kit with the Donaldson Blue filter also or maybe even his AFE big boost filter. I know the biggest complaint is the turbo noise but don't think it will bother me. I'm still debating on doing the foil delete so I could hear the turbo more.
I'm burnt out on my own research but still torn for now between these 3 options and how - or if I even want to - re-install the filter minder. I know most just zip tie it in the fender but see some put it in the pipe or at the end of the filter. Anyone have experience/opinions they want to offer? TIA!
Everything you mentioned will breath nice, but they are all mind-bending loud with intake drone on the highway, and towing will have you bashing your head against the horn just to break the monotony.
The Donaldson Blue is not the same filter media as the AIH - it's just Blue and it's manufactured by Donaldson.
Ran the 6637 for about 6 years -Breathes great but like Tug said, it is loud pulling big hills under load. Recently installed the AIS & much quieter now.
Thanks for the responses. If I end up choosing the AIS, any suggestions on the best place and price to pick one up? I saw someone said RockAuto had them for $180 shipped to your door but I no longer see them on RA - weren't they discontinued? RR I see has them with the Donaldson filter for the cheapest that I've found so far. Am I missing a cheaper retailer? Did the AIS give ya'll any better fuel economy over the 6637 or stock filter?
With stock injectors and turbo, the wildest tune will just skirt the limits of the AIS. Once you ramp up the air or fuel, the AIS was never engineered to deal with that at WOT, and the filter minder just parks on "change filter now".
If you want a good breather that makes some noise, but does it with subtlety - I like my S&B well enough. I preferred the AIS I had, but it couldn't take the air demand. I've heard the 6637s, and the S&B sounds nothing like that.
The AIS is a great choice and doing the fender hole mod makes it a bit better. Like Rich and jhl3 have said though, if you step up the turbo or the injectors you will need more air. Some people don't mind the 6637 style setup, but I have been around enough jet and turbine engines in my time in the military that I don't want to hear that crap when driving my truck.
To each their own, but when I upgrade my turbo to the KC38R and injectors to 160/80's I will be getting the 2nd generation S&B. Then I will sell my AIS here on FTE to someone else that really needs it.
I bought my AIS 3 years ago at RockAuto, it is the best price you can find on the net.
Aw man, this looks like a setup to me. Like a bad game of musical chairs - the last one with the irrelevant post looses. I didn't get home until after 1am last night. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!
It did seem outta character for you to misread something like that.
I've had the 6637 setup for the past 8 years. The truck is loud enough so the turbine whistle doesn't bother me. Unlike Sous, my time in the military was spent in the engineroom so my hearing isn't what it used to be anyway so the whistle lets me know my ears still work.
Remember that just about anything is going to be better than the stock airbox so take those Advance Diesel reviews with a grain of salt (especially since they mostly talk about how good it looks under the hood). I would also check on where you can get replacement filters and how much they cost. Personally, I'm not an oiled filter fan for my 7.3L. My old gasser sure, but not my diesel.
Decisions, decisions. The 38R is definitely in my future but probably more distant than near. Likely, whenever the current stock goes out. Same with the injectors. Thanks for all the advice.
Being the 6637 is cheaper, I may be just stubborn enough to try it out for myself and then ya'll can tell me you told me so if I end up not being able to tolerate the scream. Is the general consensus that the Donaldson blue is better than the Donaldson B085011 filter media and a prefilter cover is a good idea?

It's not quiet that's for sure. Even more so with Clay's billet 4/4 wheel.
I don't mind noise so I am probably more tolerant than most. Plus I didn't buy this truck to be quiet. My truck is definitely not what a high school kid wants to own if they plan to sneak home after curfew. I have a 2nd generation S&B (with dry filter) sitting in the garage waiting to go in.
