The KC38R is fairly new to the market. Look at it as a tuned and slightly modified 38R with a billet wheel that you can get with either a .84 or 1.0 housing.
This is what I plan to upgrade to when I swap out the stock turbo.
I tested my stock air filter once against a very dirty 6637. Years ago I had purchased a brand new filter for my stock housing, then bought a 6637 the very next week. After running the 6637 for about a year, I ordered another one and while I was waiting, I reinstalled the stock filter for the hell of it. The truck became so anemic, it was mind blowing. That super dirty 6637 flowed so much more air than the factory filter that I extended my filter change intervals to every two years. I'm one of those guys who doesn't mind hearing my turbo sing. What I really get annoyed with is the muffler delete while towing my travel trailer. That drone while climbing a grade is very annoying. Not so bad without a load, totally different animal with a load. I just purchased a 4" exhaust with a muffler that I'm waiting to install to try to cut down on the drone.
I was going to do the stock muffler delete too. That'll be another cheap mod if I don't like I won't be out that much. Local exhaust shop quoted me $60 to weld delete pipe in for me. TX now requires a muffler but apparently a tip with mesh counts as a muffling device. Just got to find something that doesn't look ricer. Maybe just go on during inspections.

did you run the napa 6637 filter or a variant?
I use the wix 6637 now. My first one was from Napa but it was a wix.
I love whistle out the pipe, but I hate the "whining" i the cab... it messes with my chi. For comparison in real-world driving (not towing), this is after I had done all I could to tame the whistle and the drone:
Thanks for the vids. I've seen some of yours Tug in my past research. You've definitely been a big help in all of this.
If I elect to go 6637, I am debating between the Donaldson filter (and replace once a year for $40) or the cleanable Amsoil EAAU4095 ($67) which looks a tad bit smaller but has a hole in the end for the factory filter minder and a place to secure to a chosen mounting bracket. Here is the Amsoil...
I drilled a small hole in the elbow of the intake hose (tube) and installed the filter minder there. Now I don't have to deal with it every filter change. If I put the minder in a hole in the end of the filter I'd never see it as the end of the filter sits right at the quarter panel (I don't know if there's enough wire slack to reach that far either).
With that... one must mull over the fact that there is actually a market for devices to make a vehicle emulate the sound of what we have for real. Are we feelin' special yet?
