Got to thinking about this - has the IWE, or anything for that matter, been damaged by trying to engage for 30 minutes at 75 MPH? And why didn't it engage? Was it already damaged in the previous attempts?

I'm just trying to get my head around what the dealer needs to do. They said they will try to recreate the issue but, as I told them, it happens randomly and infrequently. So, if the IWE is damaged they should be able to see that.

Only thing they can do is test to verify the noise.

Either way, if it turns out to be the IWE, both need replaced and hopefully the tech will verify the operation of the check valves and solenoid.

when mine acted up on a road trip, once I got home I installed a vacuum gauge to verify vacuum at the solenoid. Verified that the solenoid functioned. Vacuumed down the IWE supply lines, verified they held vacuum. And also checked each IWE for engagement and disengagement.

No clue why they acted up like that for a couple days and since they, for the best I can tell, are not still acting up nothing the dealer can do for me so far.

Ok, thanks. Guess I'll take it in and let them see if they can replicate it. But I'm pretty sure they can't because it is so random.

However, if the IWE's need to be replaced, are younsaying they've been damaged? Or that they are defective and engage at the wrong time? And why would both need to be replaced if it is the driver's side one that is engaging at the wrong time?

I'm not questioning your knowledge, I'm just trying to understand so I can better relate to the situation the tech will be in.

Thanks!

To close out this thread, I got the truck back today. They replaced the IWE's, the solenoid, and the check valve. Said the IWE's were partially engaging. How can they partially engage? Does that mean one engaged and one didn't?

Darn good questions. I might have asked them what they meant by that.

I did ask, and he didn't really know. Don't think he's really a technical kind of guy, and my questions seemed to flummox him.

I would think each IWE is either engaged or not, and will therefore transit power or not. And the fact that the driver's side IWE apparently tried to engage for 30 minutes at 80 MPH suggests that it no longer could engage.

Sounds like that. You probably would have gotten a better idea if you had a chance to talk to the technician or maybe even seen the used parts. In California, when something like this comes up, the repair facility makes the used parts available for inspection. What I've seen is they take the used parts and put them in a clear plastic bag.

That's a good idea. I wish I had asked for the parts just for my own edification.
