My Ex just started making this humming noise between 45 - 55 MPH -- beyond 55 MPH and the noise is gone. The humming noise comes and goes about every second and disappear if I get off the gas. I'm having difficulty determining where the noise is coming from. Seems like is coming from the front end area or under the hood. Not really sure.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? Please let me know what check. Thank you.
For what its worth, my tires were recently rotated and balanced. No vibration on the steering wheel and truck drives straight.
Does this noise appear parallel to any kind of slight rattling or vibration?
Is it besides a vibration I would say that this is a wornout driveline ujoint or crossmember,
but if it really dissapear over 50mph, read will get more muted, so that you cant hear it, I would say thats a bearing.
I bet it sounds like you are driving with extreme offroad wheels.
I had this problem with one of my former Dodge Rams. It turned out that it was the left rear wheel bearing, but it sounds like it was more in the front or mid.
If its strong worn out you can check it, when you lift every wheel from the ground and try to
push and pull it in all directions. It should not have any play.
Please check this and let us know.
See if it does it at the same rpm. See what rpm your engine is at at 45-55 mph. Then in a nice quiet parking lot or garage try holding your rpm at that. If you hear it then great. Grab a friend or someone to help pin point it.
In a similar way: using that previously determined rpm try putting the trans in 1st gear and driving at that "rpm" (not mph). See if you can get it to do it then.
Try airing up or down your tire pressure. May be a harmonic caused by the newly rotated and balanced tires.
I can definitely hear the hum of the tires (aggressive pattern) and I can also hear the "other" humming noise on top of that.
This humming noise goes in and out, just about every second and disappears when I let go of the gas. Would the tires makes that kind of noise? I would imagine the tire noise would be constant regardless if my foot is on the gas or not.

The only way to know for sure is to reverse the rotation they did. Even then it could show up again (but not likely) since they were rebalanced.
I've heard some weird noises over the years that were caused by tires wearing in a strange way.
It's not your tires if the noise goes away when you're off the gas.
It has a to be a bearing that is loaded when you apply the gas. Provided the sound is a bearing noise. Hard to pinpoint a noise if you cannot hear it. Is it recordable?
Does it change when you turn the wheel back and forth while driving? or when you go over dips or rises in the road? Is it like a roaring sound at all? I just replaced my wheel hub bearings and those were the symptoms.

I did not pay attention if there a change when turning the wheel back and forth while driving. Like I said the noise disappear and come back about every second and it completely gone when I let go of the gas.
Please point me to a good thread on how to replace the bearings.
Found these bearings on ebay. Are these OK to use?
Couldn't I just jack up each front wheel and give the tire a good shake to see if there are any movements? Would this give good indication if the bearings are bad or not?
I was able to jack up the front left wheel off the ground and rotated it. I can hear this metal to metal noise as I rotate the wheel. Tried to lift the wheel up and down but I felt no play.
Is that the bad bearing I hear?
Do you guys recommend the bearings sold at Ebay? Prices are really good but I have a feeling they might be junk.
How do I determine if its a coarse or fine thread?
