1981 F-100 - Issues and Input!

Hey everyone! New guy here.

I just picked up this 1981 F-100 Custom cheap from a police auction.

After some tinkering I replaced the battery and starter solenoid and it fired right up.

It is in need of some TLC and I'm up for the challenge!

Anything that anyone suggests doing beside the obvious fluid change/tune up?

The major issues I'm aware of are:

Lock cylinder casing looks like someone took a crowbar and hammer to it. Lost the key I'm guessing? or maybe someone stole it. Police said it was a DUI seizure.

Anyone out there know where I can get a replacement? Right now the truck is started with a screwdriver or a home light switch that I believe the police added so they could move it.

The tailgate will not open without taking a screw driver to each side. Not super bad just annoying.

A couple holes in the bed due to rust.

I'm getting excited thinking about getting this guy fixed up!

Thanks for any input!

Nick looking truck, I see it has AC too!

Get a new steering column from a junk yard, and you can get a key cylinder from Ford still, or Dennis Carpenter.com
LMC truck may have them too.

Tailgate rods need adjustment, kinda tricky to get in there sometimes....

Welcome to FTE! That truck has possibilities. The steering column illustrations are here: Electric Fuel Pump Control - ???Gary's Garagemahal. However, the part you need is number 3511 and I don't have the part numbers for that shown on that tab. Let me know if you need it and I can add them. Anyway, if you had the number you could see if there is a new one available. Otherwise you'll need to go to a salvage and get it. But they may want you to get the whole column.

Probably a lot cheaper (and faster) to pull the whole column.
(done this in less than 10 minutes) pulling the original Auto column and installing the manual column.
Neo, where are you located? I have an auto column sitting in the "Tractor Shack"

Lock cylinder casing (upper steering column flange) looks like someone took a crowbar and hammer to it. Lost the key I'm guessing? or maybe someone stole it. Police said it was a DUI seizure.

E4TZ-3511-B .. Upper Steering Column Flange / Obsolete

1980/89 F100/350 & Bronco with A/T and fixed steering wheel.

Only 1 may be available NOS .. I have to call the source (SoCal) to verify the part number, as he eliminated the suffix.

Note: Below the ignition cylinder is a snap ring, flat bearing and brass gear. Looking at the damage, I don't see them.

DOAZ-3C610-A .. Snap Ring-retains ignition cylinder / Obsolete

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 10 = 800-476-9653.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 170 = 800-543-4959.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
D6AZ-3E700-A .. Bearing / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO. has 122.
-------------------------------
D4AZ-3E717-A .. Brass Gear / Available from Ford

GREEN SALES CO. has 5.

It has AC but the compressor is being bypassed. Another issue (or opportunity!)

I can get a new lock cylinder from parts store. Would it come with those 3 parts you mentioned?

Can I get a price on that? or contact info to call about it?

I appreciate it!

No, they are separate and were Ford dealer parts only.
I edited in the 3 parts and sources that have them into post #8.

You'll have to call the sources and ask "how much."

The flange is located in North Hollywood CA .. I'll call the source (an ex-Ford partsguy pal of mine who owns a Mustang resto shop) to see if he still has it.

Thanks! Loving all the support here!

I believe we have some pick your own part salvage yards around. I'll have to pull it myself but I only have to buy what I need. I'd prefer a new(ish) one or one that is known to be in working order before I go the salvage route.
