Strange Problem at Cold Start
Even if it hasn't 'failed', it seems like when they get old, the check-valves inside(which lets a diaphragm pump push fuel) get sticky and leaky and don't work so well.
Fine with the engine running, not so good at preventing leakdown overnight.
I have installed 3 or 4 of these so far with perfect results.
F250 F350 7.3L Ford Injector Return Line Kit 1987 - 1994 Diesel TRUCKS NON TURBO | eBay was the latest one I bought.
They're sold out now and I need to do my injector rings. Mine were leaking pretty bad on a long trip. Not at the beginning, but got worse over time. I need that kit. Interesting point is some kits have the drains on the side of the injector drain bowl and some are through the center for older 7.3 engines. Any difference and why? mine is of the older through the center type. Can I just replace the o rings, bowls and return lines? I didn't think I had to remove the injectors to replace these isn't that correct? Thus I wouldn't need to use the copper washers.

The different types are the early style, which uses through-the-center and 3/16" lines, and the later style, which uses along-the-side and 1/4" lines.
Either will work... But if it won't be too hard, the later-style seem to be a little easier to work with. The 1/4 barbs have multiple barbs(vs just one), and it just seems like the clamps are easier to get in place.
But it's totally user preference here. They both work fine in any application.
On the feed to the high pressure pump, There's a check valve where the fuel line enters. Make sure that is good. Put a new one in if you're not sure. As long as that check valve is good, your supply lines will keep fuel in them. Although it's annoying, your return lines can spew fuel everywhere and the truck will still start and run. Some guys like to use clear line to connect the return system to the HP pump and to the filter head so that they can inspect for air intrusion. Not always foolproof, but helpful at times.
Good luck!
Get that supply side tight! Worry about the returns later!
