when starting cold the motor cranks for about 3-5 seconds before starting, it surges twice to about 1800-2000rpm and then dies. takes a few cranks to start again but then it is fine. Any ideas
AIR in the fuel. After letting it sit overnight pull the filter before you start it and make sure it is full to the brim. I'm betting there will be a little air in it.
if it's air intrusion it's probably the return lines. I would go out and pull the fuel filter in the morning and see if it's all the way full after sitting over night, if it isn't then it's air intrusion. In the meantime I would get a test light and test all the glow plugs. Alligator clip on positive battery terminal, pull off gp boot and touch tip of test light to top of gp... if it lights up strong the gp is good, if not then replace with berus.
It is generally in the return line system, but can also be in the line from the pump to the filter, the pump itself, even the schrader valve in the filter header. Look for any wet, damp spots if you are lucky you will see it, but air will leak in without it being bad enough for diesel to leak sometimes.

just an addtion to what he said air molecules are smaller than diesel molecules hence the luck if you find a damp spot air can get in the lines while diesel cannot leave the lines unless the hole is big enough if this makes sense
just checked the fuel filter after truck sat for about 36 hours and it is completely full. being new to diesel and all i am not sure where the gp are located, do i have to remove the valve cover. Also when the block heater is plugged in it is extremely load you can feel the vibration on the grill guard from it. Is that thing going out as well
temp two days ago when starting was around 15 degrees f. forgot to plug her in so it was only plugged in 20 minutes before start up.. This morning after i checked the fuel filter i started it up and it started perfect however it was plugged in for 6 hours and 30 degrees out. i will get around to checking to glow plugs tomorrow and let you know what i find
it would not surprise me if more than half of them are bad. Are these something that needs to be ordered or do the local auto part stores carry. I do know that there is only one brand that you guys say to use so i want those ones.
