They're all the same! I can buy a low-mileage wrecked truck and swap out for less than $2000. I guess if there are any minor differences with linkage, torque converter, hellifiknow, I'd have my core to swap out? That sure sounds like an easy driveway solution. I don't even know that I'd have to jack the 450 off the ground to pull it.
Don't get one from a 5.4L truck. Those are weaker. Either a 6.0L or a V10 will be fine, though the V10 torque converter is different and would have to be replaced.
Well sense the trans are all the same you could go the route
I went when mine up and died on me. Give Ed a call at >>> FICMRepair.com - FORD Powerstroke 6.0 FICM Repair, PHP Tuning and Truck Parts
You will get a Ford reman with a warrantee. Other than putting the
dead one in the crate you will have to clean the cooler lines and the
fluid to coolant cooler. You will get a new fluid to air cooler and the
trans will already have a fluid charge in it. So you really only need a
few quarts to top it off.
On the $ side The one Ed got for me was almost 1,000 less than what
Ford hits you for at the parts counter. I think it was about $3700 for
the total project including the shop that did the swap do to my back
acting up on me. But they also at the same time did some other work.
Thanks for all the great advice, everyone. I'm still not positive that I've got it diagnosed.
Mark, I drove it today to check out the symptoms you described:
Shift to 1 and the truck works as expected - moves forward and never shifts out of first.
Shift to 2 - ditto. Starts out in second and stays in second.
Shift to 3 and it literally acts like it's in Drive. From a stop, it runs smoothly through all 6 gears, just as normal as any truck I've ever driven.
Shift to Drive and nothing, at low speeds or higher gears, no difference.
The Trans temp is always normal. Fluid doesn't smell burnt. If it weren't for feeling the Drive slot through the shifter, I'd swear the letters were just not aligned correctly with the shift needle.
Honestly, I'm at a loss as to why I'd yank the trans when it drives just fine. I'm thinking I'll at least wait until it starts giving me problems. I'm going to tow a trailer with it Thursday, no more than about 7000lbs., that should tell me if I got a problem. Worse case, I burn up the trans, but it's prolly bad already.
Side note. The truck seems very well maintained, except that it was dusty dirty, maybe from sitting in the auction yard. Body, interior, bed, tool boxes, all in great shape for an 11 year old work truck. However, it says 8300 hours, which translates to a lot more than 143k miles. I'm assuming the PO idled the engine to run his welder?
I haven't really looked to much at the engine yet, except to check the fluids. It's got green coolant.
Don't you have a van or two with a good trans? Swap time.
I do, but I'm going to fix both of them. I already found one with a 6-month warranty for $700 if I have to go that route. Honestly, what I'll prolly do is find a totaled out, low-mileage truck, take the tranny out and sell any other parts off it I can before hauling what's left to the scrap yard. I would expect to break even on the cost of the wrecked truck in parts sales and scrap value so that the tranny doesn't cost me anything.

Shift to 2 - ditto. Starts out in second and stays in second.
Then the one way clutch is working normally.

Then the trans is in D, not 3. And I suspect that when you thought it was in first gear when in 1 it was really in second gear, and in third gear when in 2. I think your shift cable is not properly adjusted.

With this further information I don't think there is anything wrong inside the trans. I think it's shift linkage.

I just logged in to post the same thing. I apologize for wasting your time.
I hadn't really looked at this much, I've been busy cleaning this truck; it's covered in a layer of dirt. But it was the only thing wrong with it, that I could see, to ask about when I came here.
Now that I look closely. The Indicator is between Park and Reverse when parked, and when in Reverse it actually indicates Neutral.
The Indicator seems to be off to the right.
The good news is this is a beautiful truck. In amazing shape, once you get the dirt off. I bought it to use myself. Was going to take the top tool boxes and gas tank off, and the miscellaneous welding stuff and just have a flatbed. But it's too nice, and I got it too cheap, to not take the profit and run. Some welder or mechanic would love this truck just the way it is. I'll go find one not so nice that'll work just fine for the hauling I do and have money left over.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but what about the 5.4 makes them weaker?
Another dumb question..........they didn't use the 5R110 in the 150 did they?
