I wonder if that is effected by it being a F450 rather than a 350? Are they geared differently?

Actually, his screen name is "Mark Kovalski", I think... I found him on a search for transmission topic threads and sent him a PM to check your thread. We'll see if he gets the PM. Hopefully I did it right.

Yes they are. Plus the F-450 has larger tires.

Here I am to save the day!

I suspect that the low one way clutch has failed. If that's the case it won't engage in Drive when in first or second gear, but it will work fine in third, fourth, and fifth. It also shouldn't work with the shift handle in 1 or 2, but will in 3.

If that's it, it is rebuild time.

LOL, sorry for the misspell and thanks for the info. I'll go outside in a bit and confirm it's functionality per your description.

As a note, I'm pretty sure I saw it shift from a stop through at least 4 gears watching the rpms as I was driving in some stop-and-go traffic. I assumed there was another gear or two left as I only got up to about 40mph. (Sorry, my big dog was getting in my lap and I couldn't focus)

I also shifted into Drive going about 30 and it didn't engage. Does that contradict any of what you said? Would love to bring it to you, but Florida is a bit far. Do you know any good techs in Texas? How much does a rebuild usually cost? What about a swap out? I assume I'd have to find one that came out of another 450, and not a smaller truck. Or a 550?

Anywhere from $2000-$8000, depending on how strong you want it.

That's a bad assumption. The trans in an F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 are exactly identical.

I have never gone by that name. Jack does, but I don't.
