Yup, we should only be driving through large cities on the interstate systems during the day, no actual plans to "visit" cities.
I'd bring my .357 Mag, but it's way too large to conceal anywhere and if I get caught with that in California then I'm sure I'll be sitting in a jail pretty quick
At least we're not vising Yosemite anymore due to the closures but we are still visiting Lassen Volcanic, Redwoods, Pinnacles, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon in CA. We'll be there for the majority of the trip but we "should" be at least away from the larger metropolitan areas.
Oh.. Sequoia, and Redwoods.. I love the aroma that those trees put out!! Some don't, but I absolutely have fond memories of it when I was 5 and first being introduced to that area and the smell.

I really can't wait to see those trees, I'm always in awe of the huge trees around KS so I'm sure I'll be completely surprised by those giants!
SOunds like a great trip! If you want to carry something a little smaller then a 357 I know someone who can hook you up :-)
I have a neighbor who's a police officer and a gun nut that I could borrow from, but I'm not sure how much that's frowned upon legally carrying another person's gun. I appreciate the offer though!
I'm probably going to chalk the lack of defense up as poor planning this year but I do want to get a small concealable pistol for future trips. 9mm will likely be the choice since it will be much easier (and cheaper) to find ammo for it compared to my .38SPL\.357 MAG rounds. Jamie and the boys will probably be able to shoot it much easier too.
My neighbor typically buys it by the brick and has it shipped to his local gun shop. He goes through quite a bit of rounds monthly though by practicing at the range.
