I am new to the forum today. Just Bought a 1972 F100 RANGER XLT for my son and I to restore. The truck will be his daily driver at some point he is only 14 now. The truck has been sitting a long time so we are trying to replace the fuel tanks. Replacing seems easier and safer then cleaning the old ones out. I would like to remove the one in the cab and just go with the side mount tank. When looking on sites like LMC/NPD I only see 72 tanks with Evaporated Emission controls. Does anyone know where I can get a '72 non emission tank or will some other year tank work? Can I just bypass the emission somehow?
I will also need to remove the tank switch from the floor and dash at some point. I assume this will be straight forward. Thoughts?
Thank you for your time.

I would like to remove the one in the cab (Reproduced!) and just go with the side mount (mid-ship) tank.

The Evaporative Emission fuel tank has a large hole next to the fuel tank sending unit for the fuel vapor valve. There's no plug available to plug this hole.
The original 1970/72 F100/350 mid-ship fuel tank (without Evaporative Emission) contained 25 gallons. It was replaced by Ford (twice) with a 22.5 gallon tank.

Welcome to FTE and the Bumpside Kingdom!
Congrats on the Father/Son project. Is this the same big Tim Halvorson that worked at a couple Ford dealers where I've worked here in Phoenix Metro area?
Just plug off the emissions evap lines and you're good to go, no problem. I believe only 71-72 had them. I used an earlier (67-70 not sure) fuel tank in my 72. No extra lines on those years. Only fuel filler and fuel outlet line.
Just some thoughts here..., the Later fuel tank has advantages.
It provides an extra place to add a return line, if you want to completely fix any hot-start or vapor-lock issues with a gas loop like in modern vehicles. Alternatively, you may add an electric pump, and want a return line.
Less chance of filling the tank on a cold morning, and finding that expansion has gas spilling out later on a hot day.
Think twice about removing the in-cab tank. It works when the fuel pump is weak. There is no safety issue, according to safety statistics. (It is up out of the way.) And, if you bash the lower tank on a sharp rock, the upper tank still works.
Do use real gas-hose for the filler when you replace it. Truck repair places have it cheaper in 'stick' form. You might add a connector strap to keep bad guys from 'unscrewing' the filler neck to steal gas. It goes under the band-clamps. (If you have a locking cap.)
Would it be safe to assume that this tank: D8TZ-9002-J will fit in my 69 F250?
It's not safe to assume anything, especially when it comes to FoMoCo!
1967/69 Stylesides used a different 25 gallon auxiliary fuel tank (C8TZ-9002-C replaced C7TZ-9002-A) than 1970/72 and the 1973/78's that used this D8TZ-9002-J fuel tank.
You cannot use the D8TZ-J fuel tank in a 1967/69 unless you also swap in the 1970/72 fuel filler tube.
1967/69: The fuel cap/fuel filler tube pokes thru the quarter panel above the scallop (bumpside) line.
1970/72: The fuel cap/fuel filler tube pokes thru the quarter panel below the scallop (bumpside) line.
tbirdscott: Evaporative Emission introduced in 1970 F100's, but not all these trucks came with it. Was mandatory in sold new in CA F100's, may have been mandatory in other states.
Bill I was hoping you would chime in since you seem to have a vast knowledge of old fords. Green sales says they have a C7TZ-9002-A that they "show" is supposed to fit. They have sent me numerous pictures and as far as I can tell, it looks exactly like my original tank. Any input you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Ordered one today from Greens. thanks Bill. Now if I only I can find a C8TF-9275-A sending unit....
C8TF-9275-A is not the part number, it's the ID number marked on the sending unit. Is this the one you have now, or did someone give you this number assuming it's the part number?
The reason I ask is, your "About Me" profile says: 1967 F100. 1967 uses a different auxiliary fuel tank sending unit (C7TZ-9275-B - 6 available NOS) than 1968/72.
