OK, So i had a reman 7.3 and 4r100 dropped in my 03 excursion.. since then the engine fires up every single time.. ONLY when the truck sits for 2 days i have this issue where the truck fires right up, runs for 4 or 5 seconds then stalls out.. It starts back up on first try and idles rough 10 seconds then it runs great.. If it only sits 1 day i dont have the issue if it sits 1.5 days it will try to stall out and catches itself from stall out and doesnt stall about 3/4 of the time. The mechanic who is a reputable diesel mechanic cant figure it out.. they called swamps and they also were unsure. HELP!
What he said^^^^^. It sounds like the HPOP is leaking down and the the LPOP is catching up, refilling the HPOP reservoir and then truck is running fine.
Ditto the above two responses. There are apparently several potential root causes for this drain-back condition... cracked oil pickup line, excessively worn front cover, LPOP seal wear, and the HPOP Reservoir anti-drain valve leaking are the ones I've seen reported most often.
People always point to the check ball but has it every really proved to be a problem for anyone? I havent heard of anyone.
I was told the same thing but it is literally a steel ball and spring. not much to go wrong. After 2 weeks of searching for my HPOP leak I finally found the culprit with a little help from the guys here. I had a small leak at the front HPOP seal behind the front engine cover . It was barely noticeable bit there was a small trail of oil below the seal. You can tell if hour seal is the culprit because the reservoir will completely drain down if it is bad enough.
OK sorry for the delay in responding.. Hpop reservoir is bone dry.. I have the riffraff billet spacer.. The install of this spacer requires one mesh seal and one non mesh seal.. Is it possible that installing these backwards could cause the issue.. I'm not certain that he reinstalled them in the correct order
If it is bone dry then it's not the check ball. The oil path to the check ball is high enough that it won't drain bone dry, I would be looking at your spacer, a crack or the front HPOP seal. Try putting some oil in and see if you can see the leak. I am guessing it's internal? You don't have any puddles on the outside.
To check the oil level I took the little plug out of the top and stuck a long Alan wrench down to use as a dipstick no oil came back on the wrench when I pulled it out.. That reservoir holds quite a bit of oil.. There is a small drip spot of oil on the ground but not equivalent too the amount in the oil reservoir..
