I'm having real issues with my High Pressure Oil Pump reservior draining out. After sitting a few days I start it - it starts fine and runs for about 3 seconds and shuts off. I try to restart and have to crank for 5, sometimes 10 seconds. Then it starts and runs great again. I have verified that the level in the HPOP reservior is dropping the longer it sits. I replaced the anti drainback ball and spring. Could not replace the seat because it does not seem possible. There are no other oil leaks.
The is a real pain in the cold winter when battery power limited. What else could be causing the HPOP reservoir to drain?
Maybe the HPOP has an internal leak, but I don't know if that's possible. It's strange that it starts OK and then stalls. It's seems like the LPOP may be weak. I have heard of a LPOP not supplying enough oil to the HPOP during start-up to cause your symptoms. What do you think?
My guess is that it is not the LPOP. The purpose of the reservoir is to ensure that there is enough oil to start the engine and keep it running long enough for the LPOP to refill the reservoir. But, if the reservoir it draining out while it sits the engine can't keep running until the reservoir is filled again.
I'm pretty sure that the injectors are not leaking since there is no excessive smoke. I also replaced to injector o-rings a couple years ago.
No, I have not fixed the problem yet. I have not been able to find a positive cause. I'm about the replace the whole pump, but that costs big $$$. It seems to come and go. Worse in the summer, better in the winter. Sometimes it will sit for 2 weeks and start fine. Sometimes only 2 days and the HPOP reservior will be too low to start.
At the same time I will replace the HPOP gasket and the timing cover gasket. This is a '96 with a standpipe in the reservoir, so the anti drainback valve should not be the problem Any other suggestions? Thanks!
kwik the only ones that aren't stand pipe design are the 94.5 and 95 models. there is a write up that I have saved in my favs but not on this computer. its a mod that needs to be done to run the 17* HPOP on the 94.5 and 95 models. for the 96 and up its a direct bolt on.

So all these threads on hard starting and us telling them to check the HPOP level on thier 1999+ models are simply a waste of time?
As in my 1999.5 already has this from the factory?
And all this time I was thinking that my drain back valve was working great as the truck can sit for two weeks and I can jump in and start it up just like it was shut down two hours ago.
well thats not neccessarily true as there are other things that can cause drain down or low reservior levels. The deairation valve is one that could not be allowing oil to even get there, injector o-rings, IPR issue, or a bypassing injector along with any other oil leak in the HPOP system. Also I believe the 96 and newer HPOP still have some sort of anti-drain device in the pump. So its still worth checking the HPOP oil level.

Have you read ...this ...yet ,,Especially page 5...?
Excellent information. Thanks for the link. I believe I have confirmed that it is an internal leak in the pump. I have owned the truck for roughly 60k. I've had the problem since day 1. About 40k ago I replaced all external o-rings on the pump, the pump front seal, the IPR and the drainback valve. I also replaced all injector o-rings at that time. Last week I cleaned the IPR, put new o-rings on and drove it around. I then let it sit over the weekend. Same problem - It starts and runs for 2 seconds then dies. After 5 seconds of cranking it restarts and runs fine.
