okay, wifes excursion 2001 (mods: intake, exhaust, dp tuner, hpx), started having loooooong starts and would nt crank. changed all filters and fuel pump. looooong starts but now it cranks. continued with the looooong starts, rough idle, would sometimes shut off etc... no brainer right? cam position sensor. replaced cps with original IH Black one. no more loooong starts BUT now.......
everytime i start it up for the first drive of the day (cranks right up by the way) i can drive about 500-1000 yards and it starts freaking out. rough idle, no throttle response and will eventually die (most of the time). then i wait about a minute, crank it back up, runs rough for another minute and then runs like a top for the rest of the day. WTF!!!!
i thought about having computer reflashed but most advisors said no that fords up to date reflashes sucked, so........ any suggestions? anyone ever experienced this? ever? any and all advice as always is appreciated.
I'm thinking you have some sort of problem in your high pressure oil system. Have you checked the oil level? These engines are different animals once they get warm.
The time it takes to drive 500-1000 yards is probably about the amount of time it takes to empty the HPOP reservoir. Do you have any way to monitor the truck while it's bucking and rearing? It would be helpful to know HPOP pressure, IPR duty cycle, etc. Have you checked to make sure the nut is tight on the IPR, ICP is dry, etc.?
You could also have one or more than one leaking injector O-ring causing poor fueling to the affected cylinder(s). They tend to seal up as the engine gets warm. Have you noticed it using oil? Can you see oil in the fuel bowl?
Are you getting a "check engine light" when it runs rough? Getting your fault codes read would be a big help on pointing you in the right direction of the problem.
i am getting some wild codes and completely inconsistent. turbo low input, gear 2 ratio low input, IDM code, cps code, icp low input. but i dont get these all the time, only sometimes. also, i can let the vehicle warm up for 20 minutes or not at all and still get the same thing. not sure about the hpop, will check tonight though. i think i actually have a spare icp that i may try after i have checked the hpop. will report back later tonight. thanks!!
Keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge. If it ever drops while running that's a sign it could be your res being emptied. Does the oil pressure gauge come right up after it cranks?
checked pcm connection all is good there. reset to stock same thing. it may be a long shot but im going to change the oil tomorrow am and see if that helps things. we dont drive this all the time and it has been a long time since oil change. when i checked it was a litle low and it was sho nuff NASTY!! been running schaeffers but will use rotella 5w-40 for a quickie change in the am. if that does not do it, i thought i may pull the valve covers and check the uvc harneses next weekend.
Fresh oil is always good. the ICP is a free test, unplug it, look for signs of oil in the plug, if htere is oil there, leave it unplugged and see if things change, if it runs fine unplugged, the sensor is bad most likely.
As Chris said, really check the chip.
After everything else, with the random codes, I would also remove the 42 pin connector on the drivers side valve cover and look for worn wires, they tend to rub the valve cover there. The foolowing pic is mine, bottom center of pic, I used some heater hose and tape to protect it.
