Hey Bobby. Your photo of the Grand Marias Coast Guard facility of course caught my attention. My truck visited there regularly in the 1950's. The station in the photo was built in 1940. It was one of a whole string of such rescue/life saving stations along the southern shore of Lake Superior and the St. Marys River that were connected by private government telephone lines to the Coast Guard base in Sault Ste. Marie. My truck was used by the crews that maintained these lines. I wish I had some pictures of my truck in "action", but none have turned up. Even without pictures, I have distinct memories of my dad going to places like Grand Marie, Deer Park, Au Sable, Neebish Island, Point Iroquois, and Whitefish Point to name just some of them. On a few rare occasions, I remember somehow being able to go along with my dad to see some of these places.

Yes, lots of fond memories for sure! Growing up in the UP in the 1950's was a wonderful experience. We had such freedom, and time to explore and enjoy life. We built forts, played "army", and made fires in all the little patches of woods there were in the neighborhoods. On one memorable occasion, my friends and I caught a field on fire that the fire department had to come and put out. My friends and I roamed all over town and out into the nearby country side. We knew everyones dog and who had the best swing set and backyard ice rink.
The occasional ride in a Coast Guard truck or 36 foot motor lifeboat just made that whole remembered period of my life seem a little more special. My dad retired from the CG and moved to WI when I was in 7th grade. I was deeply disappointed, and I'd say my carefree exciting (Tom Sawyer like) boyhood days officially ended with the move.
I've been returning to the UP every now and then ever since we left attempting in some way to reconnect with the magic of a long ago time and place. My last time there was returning from the first PA Truckstock in 2019. It was an especially meaningful visit because I came in my dad's old truck.
