Adding fog lights

I'm in need of some help. I have an '03 5.4L 2WD XLT that did not originally have fog lights. I'd like to add some but am having some difficulty determining exactly what I need to make this a reality.

As I understand it I'll need the lights, wiring harness, and switch. My plan is to get a replacement factory style switch for a cleaner install rather than a separate switch for the fog lights. The mounting holes are there for the lights, as is a 10A fuse in spot #43. What I can't find is the plug that the fog light wiring harness plugs into. I've looked along the DS frame rail, under the air cleaner, but the only wire I see is to the temp sensor(?) on the DS of the radiator. Could it be that the main harness was never there from the factory?

Does this thread for a 2000 Ex help?

I've read that thread multiple times. It helps if I have to use a separate switch but was hoping to plug into an existing harness and use a factory headlight/fog light switch for a cleaner look. Trying to rule out that I'm just not seeing the harness vs it not actually being there.

Added fogs to a 2003 XLT last year. New headlight switch, lights, and made my harness. There used to be a factory kit, with harness, not cheap, and it came with a separate switch, I believe.

On mine, the switch just pulls out of the dash, harness has the fog light wiring in it, so just plugs in. Yours is most likely the same. The other end of the harness is down on the left front frame rail, just behind the radiator. It's down there, tight against the frame in the V10. I had to get to it from under the vehicle. 2 wire, don't remember plug color, I'll try to track down my wiring diagram and check.

Making a harness is pretty straight forward. Wire plugs and fittings can be purchased at most parts houses. I found an aftermarket switch on eBay for cheap, but OEM is still available. Lights, lots on eBay, or at parts houses. Prices will vary!!!

When I got my 2005, I too installed the foglamps using the kit...but had to get the lights separately as they were different for an 05. I put the switch (along with a switch for the air horns) next to the power point on the dash. (They look factory and have been there so long that when I see a dash without them it looks like something is missing..lol)

Interesting comment above about the switch and wiring. When I did mine I was told by the parts guy at the dealership that the plug for the headlights was different and that simply plugging in a headlight switch with foglights provision would not work. That's 11 years ago now....

Unfortunately I've been unable to locate this elusive harness. I've looked several times but I have not tried from underneath. Will give that a shot. If you happen to have a pic of it's location that would be a huge help.

Here are a couple of pics from my '03 V10. The plug is gray, clipped on top of the frame rail below the air cleaner, just back slightly from the ABS controller. 1st pic is of plug from top, 2nd you can see the harness (dark plastic tube) going to the lamps from below.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the pics. I took a look again from the top and bottom but just don't see the harness. I'm going on the assumption it's not there and will plan on wiring directly to a switch.

On that note, I'm assuming I can just tie into the headlight wires or existing headlight switch. It doesn't have the fog light switch but I plan on them being on whenever the headlights are on anyway. Also, I'm thinking I'll be less likely to accidentally leave them on that way.

Interesting.

I installed fog lights on my 05 service truck, 4 or so years ago. I purchased a factory kit that included the headlight switch with the fog light circuit. I remember that it had a separate harness, but I can't remember all of the connections. I didn't make the connection to the light circuit that kills the fog lights while the high beams are operating.

OP, Here is a thread in the 6.0 portion of the forum concerning OEM fog lights.

It may have additional info for you.

I looked all over my 05 for the factory harness when I added mine. I couldn't find it so I made my own. I used fuse tappers and fed the switch going to the relay from an ignition hot only so I couldn't leave them on with the truck off. For me, it just wasn't worth the hassle to have the factory switch, plus with your own harness you can have them on any time you want.

I used the kit, but used a different switch. I also wired mine (Which I think was part of the kit) for them to shut off when the high beams are on. I recall a harness that had to be run was also included. I'd have to go find the instructions to remember for sure...

Mine don't go on unless the parking lights are on...

My kit did not come with a replacement headlight switch...just a switch for the foglights. When I bought it, it was assumed by the parts guys that they wouldn't be making an updated kit for the '05 Excursion as it was known this was the last year. Perhaps a later kit came with a headlight switch...

I had not come across that one yet. A quick read through shows it might be promising. I'll do some serious reading when I get some free time. Thank you much!
