Clearance lights

I'm thinking about adding clearance lights to the roof of my cab. Was this a factory option or dealer installed. is he wiring harness still available and where did they tie into the lighting system? Whats the proper layout? I've seen five lights equally spaced and three in center group with two out board.

The usual arrangement.
Pic shows F700/1100 because these lamps were usually installed on BIG trucks, but could be installed on any F100/1100.

Very few parts are available for these trucks, some are available NOS, some have been reproduced.

Some of the repro parts sellers offer clearance lamps, but they are newer, won't match the originals.

IMO, look for these lamps at trucks in junkyards, then you can get the wiring harness, the switch and etc.

I think the # and spacing of the lights, depended on the GVWR of the vehicle. A big 600 had more than a 350 or whatever?

My '66 Merc was equipped with three more or less in the middle and none on the corners. I never see modern trucks so equipped so my guess is that the three light layout is no longer legal, at least where I am. They were spliced into the headlight circuit off the switch. The truck also had a momentary switch with "blink marker" on the bezel which would allow the driver to turn the lights off, I guess to signal others.

6t6merc,
For us curious types - would you please further describe the function of the 'blink marker' switch - was it simply an on/off switch for the clearance lights?

Thanks!

It was a momentary switch, like a starter button of old, installed in a hole drilled in the dimple where the vent pull button was on the earlier trucks. Push and hold the button the clearance lights go out, release it and they come on. I guess it was for signalling other drivers - can't think of another reason for it.

Thanks for the explanation, 6t6merc!

I'm guessing that looking at the illustration provided by ND in post#2, it would be part#15443.....

BarnieTrk

By the way, this subject reminds me of when I was in Japan (~20 years ago). I asked someone why some of the bigger trucks going down the highways would have their clearance lights blinking..... I was told that when the truck exceeded the posted speed limit, their cab mounted clearance lights would blink to notify those drivers around them. Yep, no kidding......
