I really want to put some cab lights on my truck. I don't think they would be to terribly hard to install, but I am wondering if my headliner will ever be the same after I have taken it down once?
Also anybody know a place on the net to get a good deal on cab lights?
Anything else I need to know about the cab lights if and when I decide to get them?
There's a good write up with pics in this thread... He put clearance lights on an '08, not sure what year you have but the principles should be the same.
I did the install on my '02 with no problems. I made a cardboard template, layed out the measurments, placed the template on measurments, punched (a Greenlee 7/8" punch)and drilled the holes, installed the lights and wiring harness. I love the look. Headliner could not be removed because it is a crewcab, just moved it around while installing the lights.
I bought the factory lights and wiring harness from Y2K Ford, a site sponsor.
Jason beat me to it too. I was gonna suggest the same thread. That font is killing me... had to back up about ten feet to read it. Just kidding... Good luck with the install.
Sorry guys, UBB coding is screwed up ONCE AGAIN! Line spacing and character spacing are hit and miss, and it seems to happen only at night. Plus, I cannot edit any post when the board is screwed upo, so I can't edit my above post where the forum added my name to the web address. I will post the website link in another post below this one.
When I was looking for one of these trucks I told myself if whatever I got had the cab lights I was going to "shave" them. Now, if my truck didnt have them I would be trying to add them
I did mine last summer. I also made a couple templates. I covered the roof with masking tape where I was gonna work so I could draw my layout. Once I determined the centerline, it was just a matter mark and drill. Al of the interior parts come apart easy enough. I did feel a little funny drilling 15 holes in the roof of a perfectly good truck. It took me about 4 hours with the help of my wife. I can't believe somebody would order a truck without them. They are only a $50 or so option.

4 hours is pretty good.
I ended up taking somewhere around 12 hours over 3 evenings to install the OEM cab lights on my Truck. That did include pre-wiring for future accessories and a CB antenna cable and mount, but that was maybe 4 hours of labour itself. I can get a little picky when it comes to details, but it turned out pretty good in the end.
I've been wanting to do this mod to my wife's Excursion ever since we owned it, and just kept putting it off, spending the money on go-fast parts instead.
Back in November of last year, I bought my 2002 F250, so now I have TWO rigs I have to do this mod to!!
I did this mod about fourteen months ago - took about 4 hours - could have done it in less time if I didn't hesitate so long before drilling every hole in the perfectly good roof. Very happy I did it.
Make sure you buy the OEM Ford clearance lights and harness. Several of the Ford sponsors on here sell the parts complete as a package. Usually runs about $90. There is also a dealer on ebay (Heller Ford) that sells the package with a drilling template and instructions. I also used Motoman's instructions as a guide. I bought mine on ebay and the harness just plugs right in on the passenger kick panel and the wires have the plastic clips that push into the holes already in your roof and front right pillar.
Don't worry about dropping your headliner, you only need to pull it down about 6 inches to do the mod and you won't damage or bend it in the process. Just make sure you remove the grab handles from above the windows as well as all the other front trim pieces and it just hangs down enough to do the work.
