In my 66 the PO had butchered holes for speakers in the original steel door panels.
I had some 1/4" thick walnut veneer ply laying around.
Using the original panels as templates, I made new ones.
I plan to do the headliner and make a center console from walnut as well.
That looks great! I really like that. Make sure you post pictures of your headliner and console when you have them done.
There was a posting from another member a week or so ago who made a wooden headliner that looked great as well. His was done with wooden planks/strips going front to back.
Well I'm out of time to tackle the headliner, but I did craft some kick panels, restored and painted the crotch coolers, and made a radio delete plate.
You can also see where I have stripped all paint from the dash and components.
Then with a foam block and 120 grit sandpaper I grained the raw steel followed by clear coat.
Man those look great. My access panels have also been butchered. Actually, the whole door has been as somewhere along the line someone removed the custom cab panels around the door and window handles. I love this wood idea. Will definitely watch for what else you add.
Also, I love the dash! So to be clear, you just stripped off all the paint and got a nice swirl pattern on the metal and then cleared it? Really cool idea and sure beats trying to paint in there
Yep, removed all paint, grained the steel with 120 grit, clean well with lacquer thinner.
Taped off the doors and widows.
Sprayed with Rustoleum satin clear enamel.
