strange transmission problem

strange transmission problem

So, in my 99 Bounder RV (F53 chassis), V10

I think it has a 4R100 transmission in it (I have not verified this).

I had the oil and filter changed about 10K ago.

Runs and shifts fine .... then I stop and idle with it in gear (say stopped in traffic for a few minutes).

Now the thing shifts super super hard! I actually get rubber in all gears.

So I pull over, shut it off. Restart the unit and everything is fine again.

It does this very consistently!

I went to the local transmission shop. They said with 110K in an RV it could be anything and I should think about letting them rebuild it.

Now that is something I would do ... not diagnose a problem and just rebuild it. I thought a "professional" would actually look for the problem first.

I don't want to rebuild the transmission if there is small item that will fix this.

You need to read the codes. The places that read codes free (and the shop you went to) can't read these codes. You need a good independent shop or a Ford dealer. Once you have the codes we'll know where to start.

Awesome ....

Will any "reasonably price" code reader ... say in the $200 range ... be able to read these codes?

I need to get a code reader anyway so it would be nice if I could buy one that would read these codes also.

The AE comes to mind as being able to read the Extended Ford codes.
Extended not really being the correct word but you get the idea.

Other options are the BIG tool truck guy's scanner or anyone that
has access to a VCM or VCM2 and IDS.

But really a shop that knows what they are doing and not a parts thrower
that will 9 times out of 10 cost you more that it really should of.
